Thanks for your concern. We can in and out our front door but all our cars on the other side of the tree. My son pulled into the driveway and next to the garage about 5 min before tree fell.Can't get close enough yet to get a good look but appears to be only minor damage to roof and rain gutter. Some minor damage to the driveway but pavers should make it easy to fix. Unfortunately, it took out a tree we planted a few years ago and a mama bird was trying to find her babies. County (it is a street tree ficus) has a contractor out now at 10 pm clearing our driveway.

Most likely she is suing the cab driver because she assumes the cab company has the deep pockets --- and that they will settle. The lawyer will then get about 40% of whatever is that settlement while the mom will get the rest. Very few cases actually go to trial. 931 - if, as you say, the mother needs to do SOMETHING it would be better if that something were volunteering to help those who have alcohol problems.

I have seen a black pick up truck riding around with mattress tied on the bed 3 times recently... Same truck - once near La Cumbre and twice in Hope Ranch. They pulled over at the sign at the intersection of La Cumbre and Foothill and walked over to sign... Seems connected and odd.

Thanks 343. I called the county road maintenance department and spoke to a very helpful employee who did a little research for me. He reported that the county maintains the first mile of the road. That may mean that the rest of the road may be private. Can the public have an easement through a road like this? Maps often show which roads are private and off limits to the public but not in this case.

A friend sought refuge when he couldn't access his home across the street from the house. His family reportedly heard popping sounds before the explosion and when the fire erupted it damaged a neighbors home. That neighbor was trying to defend the flames and may have suffered smoke inhalation. Police are investigating and gunpowder is apparently "all over the house."

Family and pets all safe. House is a mess. Back half of home destroyed. Firefighters were able to pull some belongings and laptops out the owner told me. Still cutting into roof to douse small fires in walls. Family has a place to stay and cleanup and board up company already on the scene. Many friends are stepping up to help them tonight.Thanks goodness no one was injured.

All is well. 3 canoes, 1 huli'd (flipped). Had some trouble getting it bailed out, so had to reflip. The kayaker was fine and stayed to help. All 3 canoes paddled back to west beach without further issue. Big thank you to the Harbor Patrol for coming out to ensure everything was OK. You guys are awesome!

We were driving by Momouth and beat the first responders to the scene. There was a lot of black smoke pouring out of the house and large flames visible through the smoke. I have a picture I can share, but am not sure how to post it. Fire was put out after about 20 minutes.

Here is the fine point to the matter. Did Mr chavez get kicked out of the cab for being to drunk? or did he just simply wander off. A solid witness would make or break the case. Guilty or not, it doesn't matter. This poor kid is dead. The boy was on the freeway far from where he got out of the cab. He must have been in a blackout and there isn't much a taxi driver can do when this happens.

Next mattress purchase for me will probably be from Mattress Mike's after reading Yelp reviews. Thanks OP. I was wondering about that very same sign. I saw one at El Colegio and Storke (near IV school) about a week ago or more, but it's gone now. It struck me as very strange and sketchy. It didn't occur to me that it was a scam, but that makes much more sense. I don't need a mattress, but even if I did, I wouldn't buy a used one after all the infestations of bed bugs! Gross - (it's not an urban legend). Buy new, or from someone you know and trust.

Not happy with the fact Cottage has put so much money into image while neglecting the purpose of a hospital: to help the ill. We've had lots of recent experience at Cottage Hospital and the poor care- in some cases neglect- of the patient, mistakes (oops, sorry, overdosed the patient), disgusting food, in most sections is truly reprehensible. Family members - be sure to stay with your loved one while they are in Cottage - someone needs to be their advocate! Can't say Sansum has been perfect, but certainly much higher quality. The only advantage I can see at this point is that if the two merge records might be shared. Pretty ridiculous for each institution to be ignorant of the patient records from the other.

Who needs a job when I've got LAW on my side! Seriously, that is ridiculous. No one would be a cabbie if it meant that. What should the cabbie do if I really did do the above - chase me down? And dropping someone off in a median strip is very different from stopping so someone can get out to puke & then walking away from the cab. You keep quoting the law - can you explain where you're pulling this from? And can you mention a few prior court cases that are similar (just names so I can google, I know you can't post links)? I tried googling common carrier +taxi + suit, but didn't see anything that seemed similar. It seemed like most of the stuff I found was drunk/negligent taxi drivers causing accidents where the riders got hurt.

Please check if the address you went to matches with Mattress Mike's! Mattress Mike's IS in a warehouse complex with a pull down metal door and has been a reputable and legit business for years. I'm curious to know if they'd resort to these shady tactics though, because that bothers me and I'd prefer not to give them my business again if it was them (or did they sell the business?). Rori's is good..yes...Great. Uh, no. "One of the best in the country"? Far from it. She does a pretty good job, and yes, uses some decent ingredients. But why would anyone in Santa Barbara bother when the country's best ice cream been made here for decades? McConnell's is the best ice cream I've ever had and I'm a big ice cream fan. From what I've heard, they've been making their stuff from scratch ever since they started. I've tried my share of ice creams from here to the East Coast, and while there are some good ones, for my money, none of them come even close to McConnell's.

Think about it...he was out in a safe location, he was not in the middle of the street. He left the car, he walked off. Does the cab driver need to go get him? Does a cab driver need to wait for you while you get out of a cab drunk to go puke in the bushes. I just do not think its' as clear as you state. I would be surprised if the mother wins this case. I (and you) obviously do not have all of the facts, but with what was presented I just don't see it being the cab drivers fault. I think HE was at fault for not controlling himself and his "friends"...well, with friends like that...

In answer to your first three questions: Yes. In answer to your fourth question: The law is clear. A common carrier must exercise the utmost care in dealing with a passenger from the moment of pick-up (including entering the cab safely) until they are delivered to their destination. The passenger must exit the cab in a safe manner as well (a cabbie can't tell a passenger he must alight in the center median, for example). Then the cabbie's duty to care for his passenger ends. Think about it: a contract is made. The passenger agrees to pay a certain sum to the taxi company, who agrees to deliver said passenger safely to a destination. A drunk/disabled/mentally handicapped passenger is still a passenger, and the company still has a duty to fulfill its end of the contract.

68.3% of the time, statistics on public sites are made up. As to a "billion dollar library remodel", the Seattle Central Library only cost $155.5 million dollars. It is, by all accounts, a stellar achievement of efficiency, technology, and public accommodation. They spent an additional $10M for a temporary library. I respect whatever free right he has to scam or.. not scam.. This was simply a warning that the signs are not what they seem.. And since I actually went there and experienced the place.. {did you}? I thought I'd share to be a good neighbor.
Who knows if they deliver on their promises.. Their signs are misleading , their product is crap, and they ask for money before product. That is all I know..

The cab driver is not at fault. 945 might have some legal quotes, but do they really pertain to someone who get's out of the cab on their own accord and walks away? Is the cab driver legally responsible for an inebriated person? Does he take responsibility for every drunk person that gets in his cab and where they get out of the cab? This kid was so drunk, he could have dropped him at the right address and the kid still would have walked off in a stupor. Does the cabbie need to tuck him in as well? In regard to food, to me the word 'artisanal' indicates an elevated level of care in sourcing and handling of ingredients (freshness, lack of preservatives, or additives, etc) using equipment (if needed) of quality to hand produce (note, not manufacture using machinery) a food of exceptional quality, which is then packaged and marketed with the same level of care. The way things are done if doing it for onesself. The end result usually stands above mass-marketers' product in quality. It does not necessarily indicate that it will cost more, but generally that IS part of the economics of scale. The quality of small batches is easier to control, but the product may take longer to make. The word has been in use some years now among the food forum posters (not talking about yelp) but the general concensus is that it has been so overused as to become meaningless. Jokes are made about artisanal Slim Jims, etc.

Sounds like he was so drunk, he might not have been able to unlock his front door. Is the cabbie responsible for helping a person inside their house? Cabbies are not babysitters. And puking inside his cab costs a lot more than $20 to clean up. The cabbie's biggest mistake is agreeing to drive a drunk person home. But that is probably a lot of their business unfortunately.

I used to live near Cottage and if the neighbor with about 7 cars + 3 large vans wasn't taking up all of the spots near our house, it was the Quest Diagnostics vehicles or the Cottage construction workers who weren't supposed to park in the neighborhood...I knew that I could call cottage and report the contractors and supposedly they could get a $1000 fine from cottage, but I never went to that effort - all I did was whine about it! The cabbie admits that he stopped the taxi so Chavez could vomit, and then he move the taxi to a parking lot. The cabbie maintained visual contact with Chavez as he attempted to locate the taxi, but the cabbie never made any attempt to signal Chavez so that he could return (ie, the cabbie hid so he wouldn't have to finish transporting a passenger, perhaps because he didn't want vomit in his cab). The whole time, the cabbie was in telephone contact with the taxi company owner and he acted on his orders. The cabbie's duty in this case was to: 1. Signal his fare when he saw that he was lost so that he could finish transporting him. Or, 2. Call the police if he believed that his fare was too drunk to continue the journey in his cab safely. Too drunk to ride in a cab is certainly too drunk to walk down a street at night.

Rori's is great, if overpriced. I tried them all a few years ago, back when the Jeannine's in Gelson's was the only place to get a pint. The lemon, the non-dairy chocolate, and the salted caramel were my favorites. My wife liked root beer float best. I don't know why McConnell's even needs to be brought up in this discussion -- it doesn't have to be one or the other, both = great local products. Plenty of gluttony to go around :)

They have cameras all over the place there, they would have seen him imbibe the alcohol, and/or follow his every move through the casino if they thought he had been drinking in the parking structure.

Take down any sign that is illegally posted. If it's not a city ordinance/county ordinance sign, it is illegal and just trash. Garage sale signs left up for weeks, etc. Take them down. I guess a lost animal sign could be an exception for a while. Problem is people put up these signs and then forget or just expect someone else to take them down.

The friends involved did the right thing by calling a cab for Simon. The cabbie did the right thing by returning to the bar to tell the friends what happened. Perhaps there was nothing else the cabbie could do with Simon. Should he have left his cab idling and chased him down and held him for police? None of us really knows the details. Maybe there is a legitimate case, maybe there is not. I just know that it is sad all the way around. The only person who was deliberately negligent was Simon himself.

People can live well on their SSI check in many, many other parts of this state. It is foolish for them to try and do it in Santa Barbara. That is a choice, and it is poor choice. Not one we need to bail out. Show them a map of California where their SSI check will let them live comfortably. Tehachapi, lower San Joaquin Valley, Olivehurst, Yuba -- lots of places.

930, you miss my point. I realize that this is a county issue, not a city issue. My disgust comes from the fact that the county guy wishes they could do what the city does. The city can and does kick graffiti victims while they're down. The county rep wishes they could do the same. It's disgusting. Instead of trying to prevent vandalism from happening or going after the criminals causing the damage, both the city and county reps seem to think that the proper course of action is to stick it to the victims. I'll bet Carbajal would feel different if it was his property being defaced. To be clear, I am in no way saying that people should paint graffiti on Carbajal's fence or walls so he can learn how it feels to be a victim of taggers. Nope. Not saying that at all.

It seems the driver let him out to throw up and then moved the cab out of traffic to wait for him to finish. It is unclear whether Simon then wandered off or what happened. I don't see any glaring negligence on the driver's part, even as a common carrier.

The day of each show the Bowl posts on the website the camera policy of the artist for the show that night. Common practice has been point and shoot, lens does not remove. So there are many cameras out there that you can use. I sit behind the sound board in my seat and use a Nikon Coolpix. If the lighting is good for the show then you have a good chance of getting something good. If there is bad or low lighting you can't get anything worthwhile. The light is constantly changing on stage so that is a factor to fight also. I switch between manual and "the little green icon" depending on the light. I would love to get a "real" camera in but I'll settle for a point and shoot.

There are lots of great options in SB, but we just found someone that boards dogs in their home in Santa Barbara. Their yard is huge and grassy, and they took great care of our Aussie. We got a full report when we picked up, and they even took our dog to the beach twice! It as half the price of Dioji, and our dog got a lot more TLC. They have 2 dogs of their own that were really friendly and wore our dog out. Thinking about weekly daycare now with them. They have a website www.dogdaysinsb.com .

I heard the cabbie dumped him on the freeway..Either way he should have not given the guy a ride he took responsblity for the fare when he let him in the cab. I had a friend ripped off by a cab driver once here when I questioned it I was ganged up on by other cab drivers..They threatened to kill me over 20 bucks.. That was along time ago but I haven't taken a cab since rather give a friend 20 bucks for a ride.

Thank you Roger for using discretion in reporting. I called to report a neighbor sicing a vicious dog on kids on bikes, shooting bottle rockets onto roofs all around him and several other offences that were ongoing. The dispatcher in Santa Maria City said the RP-said my name-at-gave my address on the air. The police just talked to him--and the next night the window on my motorhome was broken in my driveway. Two days later 3 of my tires were slashed-in my driveway. Roger uses his head and heart. Thank you!!! PS the police said they had no proof it was him.

Not once have I heard anyone suggest that this young man take responsibility for his actions. He drank himself into a stupor. He wandered off into the night away from a paid ride. He wandered onto the freeway and now he's paid the ultimate price. Now he's the victim? It's sickening the lack of taking responsibility by family or friends of this guy. Regardless of how people THINK the law SHOULD work, this is what the law ACTUALLY is: 1. A taxi is a "common carrier." As such, the operator has a duty to exercise the utmost care (not just reasonable care...this distinction is important) in transporting its passengers AND an obligation to deliver said passengers to their destination. 2. Even in a situation where a passenger may be ejected by the operator, the operator still has an obligation to discharge his passenger in safe place, not on a street where he may be injured. 3. Taxi companies have been held liable in real world cases where a cabbie discharged passengers before their destination and they were subsequently injured.

If you come too early, i me and my roomates enjoy the 100% off midnight sale on State Street. Found a awesome 4 set of chairs last year during Fiesta, camped last weekend at Live Oak with them.. told my friends and we will be searching come friday night. ( i would never do it the morning of the parade, that is just wrong)

I don't think the mother has a case, but I can understand her anguish and the need to make someone, anyone, other than solely her son responsible for this tragedy. Never underestimate a mother's grief. This is a suit filed out of heartache, not financial gain. No amount of money will ever bring him back. She knows that. She just needs to do SOMETHING. We all know there are far more productive ways in which she could and should deal with her loss. But at this point in her mourning, she needs to blame someone. I get it.

852 - there are many doctors who don't take insurance. You can pursue reimbursement through your insurance once you pay the bill. These doctors are sometimes called concierge doctors and most of them are excellent and worth the money. They just simply refuse to deal with the BS of billing insurance companies themselves. 2 of the docs in my PCP's office are concierge and they are booked solid - don't kid yourself about what people can afford to spend on their health. Sansum and Cottage have always worked together closely - I don't see anything wrong at all with a merger. I've gotten excellent care from both - care that I needed due to my own foolishness. It's not my concern about who owns them or what they do to run them - they provide the care I need - not much more to it than that.

The article states the cabbie returned later top the bar to let Chavez's friend's know what happened (they don't mention if the friends demanded their money back, they don't mention the money at all after that, actually). He didn't "take the money & run. It's the drunk kids fault he walked onto the freeway, NOT the cabbies. The cabbie should have called 911. But you're NOT required to call 911 when someone's drunk. It's the RIGHT thing to do, but not a legal requirement. I really hope the mom doesn't get anything from the cabbie/cab company. Huynh is another story, but good luck proving he was drunk - they might have a shot saying he was too tired/unfit to drive. 904: who was the other drunk person? As far as I know, only one person was tested, and that's Chavez. You can't prove Huynh was drunk, he wasn't caught until much later. No chance to have him tested at that time. Sucks, but that's a common occurrence for hit & runs.

Been in a cab lately folks? Every one of them has a sign clearly posted - they reserve the right to refuse service to anyone....and that service can be terminated at any time. No doubt that this is a sad story that showcases human behavior at it's worst but it is quite doubtful that the family will have a positive outcome from this lawsuit. I certainly understand their reasoning. My ex drove a cab for years - he kicked lots of folks out but never ever on the freeway.

Hm, I don't see the taxi driver at fault here-- he doesn't have a complete and legal obligation to take the drunk guy to the house. The drunk guy himself (Simon) is responsible for his own behavior. He choose to get belligerently drunk. Now, it would have been *nice* for one of his friends to accompany him home and make sure he got there okay. But it is Simon's faulty for behavior..and it's the drunk driver's fault for choosing to drive drunk, endangering everyone on the road- both vehicles and pedestrians. I understand that Simon's mother is devastated but this lawsuit won't give her any more closure and it won't bring her son back.

The $20 is about all that should be recoverable in this case - and not by the mother. A cab driver is not responsible for a client who asks to get out to throw up and then wanders off while the cab is trying to park legally to wait. It's a terrible tragedy to be sure but the fact that the lawsuit is seeking millions in punitive damages (not actual damages) is a tragedy in itself.

850, I see the photo of copter 308. The sheriff chopper was also involved. get your facts straight ! And that fire that happened up at paradise a few weeks ago, Im sure we would've been fine without any air attack, RIGHT ? I believe there were 3-5 choppers fighting that one. I am all for cutting spending, but these helicopter serve a very important role in protecting us during these fire events. Look at the history of gap and tea fire, the choppers saved many times their value in local real estate and property. Every penny put towards these aircraft is a sound investment in protecting our county !

I went to Cottage hospital in 3 separate times. They bill you for each visit separately. Each visit after insurance cost me $75.00. No biggie. But they only billed me for two of the visits...never received a bill for the 3rd injection.

Village did some repairs and it seemed quite expensive for their labor; had some mild service issues. Plan to get quality parts and reasonable labor cost. But, I am probably guilty of being cheap too. ") Gotta be to live here with kids!

I'm so happy to see someone else cares about poor old Lompoc! That being said, I'm still trying to figure out how so many people were suckered into voting yes on a $75 million bond issue for a new "hospital" that turned out to be an empty building. (By law, none of the bond money can be spent on equipment - what kind of deal is that?) We were told that the old hospital was no good as it wouldn't be "economical" to seismic retrofit it - yet, almost as soon as the measure was approved, they started renovating the old building for a "first responder rehab" facility. Can you say 'bait and switch'?

The owner is dealing with a "landlocked" property and can't do anything to improve it until Union Pacific gives him access across their land. Meanwhile, the neighbors are complaining about the graffiti, but without a County ordinance, nothing can be done. Sounds everyone should contact Union Pacific and urge them to give the owner access to his property.

Don't mock this with false choices. The problem is real and the solution needs to address the problem: the unsavory conduct of some individuals is not conducive to an appealing, retail environment. Yes, the entire point of a "downtown" is an appealing retail environment that generates necessary sales tax revenues. That is what is at stake today.

It will be good for patients because most are over-treated and over drugged for life style conditions and concomitant treatment of iatrogenic side effects caused by the "treatment" itself. Less will be more in tomorrows health care and that will be good for the patient rather than treating them as disjointed bag of unrelated and unsubstantiated metrics. Sorry to be harsh to a well-meaning medical professional, but no one knows better what has gone wrong in US health care than someone who watched this happen ever since Upjohn learned DIC marketing of Tagamet could put US health care on its knees and subvert the former doctor patient relationship with mass direct marketing to the worried well. Medicare was not the major shift in health care delivery; DIC marketing by Big Pharma was the villian who stole this sacred trust away, but doctors did go along with it ....for all the wrong reasons. There was money on the table ready to be scooped up by someone. Few said no. But some did.

Ah yes Thurston, I myself only build pools from solid gold, lasts the longest. I use spun diamond nets to fish out dead bees, and I filter the evian-supplied water through a matrix of silkworm fibers that is replaced daily from an on-site organic mulberry orchard. I have several around town in case I get hot while traveling. Not the cheapest, but what are ya, poor?

Ultimately this won't be good for patients or doctors. It will only "align" with the new rules of the game that is being required by government. It SOUNDS like it makes sense... the reality is far from it, but as my colleague said, "...that ship has sailed". How do you think this will influence the new Lompoc Hospital?
What impact will it have on us private practice docs in Lompoc.
It will take our patients that we've seen for years - our practice will dry up. It's like the medical "Dust-bowl". I defy anyone to give a cogent explanation of how this REALLY going to be good for patients. It just allows the medical giant to continue playing the game. Patients have been reduced to a tertiary consideration.

I've talked with them several times about NOT cutting the Wisteria right before it's supposed to bloom!! And, I'm trying to get the City to install Dog Waste Stations, with the dog-poop bags, so the dog owners can clean up after their doggies. Any help from EdHatters in making this happen would be greatly appreciated. And, putting the port-a-potty back, so the humans have a place to "go" instead of leaving their poopies & peepee along the fence.

There is the growing trend towards concierge medicine in the US, and Santa Barbara. These doctors don't take insurance, but charge a monthly fee directly for routine medical services and suggest you carry a high-deductible catastrophic policy for any potential later extraordinary medical needs. Doctors are not slaves so any thought you have a "right" to health care stops, when are no medical professionals willing to provide it. Obamacare only guarantees you have a right to have some union payroll para-professional attend to your "medical" needs. Take and aspirin and call your health insurance company in the morning ..... to cancel your premiums. Oh, that's right you can't. Or else armed IRS agents will show up on your doorstep enforcing the Obamacare mandate.

I'll be very happy to see the "reserved seating" tradition come to an end. It might have been charming before the parades became big tourist draws, but now it's offensive. The practice is especially annoying when banks, lawyers and businesses pre-claim whole swaths of the public's sidewalk for their employees and favored clients. Get your facts straight. And why do we need 5 helicopters? Seems to me the two aircraft that were paid for by a private foundation not the public's money should be flying. What's the issue? Does the Fire Chief have that much pull with the Sheriff and the BOS?? Or does the fire union run the show???

Ice cream is eggs, sugar, milk and cream cooked into a custard and frozen while being whipped in some fashion for greater or lesser quantities of incorporated air. Flavors of choice and intensity can be added by anyone. Additional chemicals and ingredients can be added for various manufacturing goals. But basic ice cream remains sugar, eggs, cream and milk. Rori can't add anything more or less to that basic equation; only tart it up with additional names and charge more to make it appear more valuable than its original content. Then get a cadre of yelpers to spread the word and trash the competition. Buzz-cream is what she really sells. Sure it is good, as long as she sticks to eggs, cream, milk and sugar. My primary care Dr at sansum noticed something strange and after a series of tests and exploratory procedures the condition was isolated and I just had surgery at UCLA to correct the condition... A friend that provides billing services for many local doctors gave me this advice years ago: throw away the first two bills after a hospital visit. Only after a few months do things get sorted out and it is better to withhold payment than request a refund following an overpayment.

Seriously, how did you get these photos? Did you get special permission and if so, how? Once when I had a camera with me they refused to let me in until I got rid of it. Kind of difficult since I arrived by bicycle. I would have loved to have been at the Steve Miller concert but I have had so many unpleasant interactions with security at the Bowl I am reluctant to go anymore. I have heard much worse security stories from others. But, seriously, how did you get these photos? Did you get special permission and if so, how? Thanks!

Competition be damned. I'd just like to see these two entities have the same billing dept. I spent over six months ping-ponging between the two when Cottage incorrectly tried to bill me a $200 copay for an outpatient procedure done by a Sansum surgeon. I about lost it when for the tenth time, each pointed the finger at the other as the source of the problem. They are right across the street from each other, yet electronically they are worlds apart.

The sad fact is that it doesn't really matter what it's worth (at least if you're trying to sell it), but what people are willing to pay vs how much you want to get rid of it. If it's a "real" antique, you'd want it appraised by a knowledgeable person, but I'm not sure it would qualify, being only 45 years old.

Speaking of Sama Sama...I sat down to order something the other day, looked at the, ahem, plethora of great choices (they have like three things on the menu and they all sound horrible), and promptly walked out. The music blaring from the back patio was ridiculously loud. I will not be returning. I think Sama Sama is the java word for double thumbs down.

I live just above and East of Tuckers Grove and have seen a mountain lion on one occasion and a large bobcat twice in the past 10 years. Both of these cats range over a fairly large territory but the large number of fires we have had in recent years have changed their patterns. There has been a large increase in the rabbit population in the foothills and rabbits are one of their favorite prey. Also, it is very dry in the higher altitudes as a result of the lack of rain in the past few years. These cats not only seek water but want to inhabit the areas where water attracts their prey.

Guess what - anyone can park on a public street that is not permit only or time restricted. Facts are - over 80 percent of teh homes here have been converted into multiple rental units, thus the major increase in street parking (by necessity, no requirement that you be allowed to park on the property if you rent). That is the main problem here. Absent some sort of ordinance for this type of parking, you are out of luck and if you rent, should look elsewhere if you can't deal with the facts of street parking and renting here in SB.

Same thing happening on Los Aguajes with QwikResponse. They are expanding, they don't have room to park their additional vehicles so they park their trucks in front of our house, the employees now park in the street... so now we have even more limited parking. Not to mention how they try and squeeze into a space, partially blocking our driveway. And to think we were once good neighbors keeping the bums out of their lot - no more good neighbor... time to start calling the towing company even if it's an inch over the line into our driveway.

Don't worry, you will get help from the City. It is still run by those transportation dreamers and social engineers that believe if they narrow the streets to cause traffic congestion, install dangerous "bulb-outs" and useless roundabouts, widen the sidewalks whether they need it or not and eliminate parking wherever possible, they will solve all parking problems. These "transportation improvements" (as they call them with a straight face) will force everyone to walk, ride a bicycle or take the bus. Before long your block will be empty and you will not care because you wont be able to have have a car anymore.

McConnells is good enough for me, anywhere and anytime. Why does the Prius set brag Rori's goes "clear across the globe" to get her ingredients when any carbon footprint is one carbon footprint too many? Pretentious is the best description. Yes, Sama Sama tried some interesting custom Rori flavors (ginger lemon grass - Thai Ice Tea but both were meh - the German biscotti was okay) but how overly cutesy was it to serve tiny portions of them in mason jars? Why pay extra to try and put a Thai Ice Tea flavor in an ice cream when you can get a whole glass of it at half the price and get the real thing? Stick with a box of Trader Joe mochi ice-cream balls if you want a touch of the exotic with your ice cream.

The creek restoration at Bohnett Park has grown in and is stunningly beautiful. Please visit this park. A few years ago it was just bare, scraped soil banks. Now it is lush with towering trees. Excellent work, SB City Parks and Rec.

Agree - the squatters are ruining the parade vibe. So many of my neighbors are not even attempting to go because they all say it's too much of a hassle to find parking then, try and find a spot. Last year there were people hoarding huge spaces while everyone else is jam-packed. Not cool.

Actually the bicyclist may have just left the back entrance to Elings park at the end of West Valerio. I live near there (so does Nick) and about once a year a car parked on the street in my block is sideswiped or totaled by someone who gets over-excited driving the slalom course down the hill. Definitely dangerous for bicycles, cats, anyone crossing the street. We used to have a motorcycle cop watching the area but not for the last decade.

I think the question should be, what are local authorities doing about the dramatic rise in meth use in this community. I had an employee who, it turned out, was a meth-head, and I kept giving him chances because I just thought he was trying to get his bearings. Turned out he was a meth head and master manipulator. No doubt, this girl has developed the same manipulation skills that most chemical/alcohol dependents acquire to get by in our society. Meth use is definitely growing here and I don't see it talked about much...

If this is true, they're keeping it a secret. Noozhawk makes no mention of it in their recent article. There's nothing about it on the Independant. The Solstice official website is mute on the topic. To be fair, the Noozhawk article is lame. They have erroneous information (stating people reserve their seats days in advance; that hasn't been allowed for quite some time) so I doubt they even thought to ask the question of anyone. All fluff, no filler typical of that rag.

You can see on her FB page and compare it to her booking mug shot, that she has lost a lot of weight. You don't lose weight like that without a little help, and it appears she was using Meth as the method. No matter what, it's a very sad case for all involved. Maybe, she will get her act together once & for all.

I was told by the SBPD that parking a fleet of vehicles used for a business on a residential street is in fact illegal, confirmed. However if you run a home business you are allowed to have one vehicle parked that is used for that business. Same goes if you drive a company vehicle home, legal to park on the street. So depending on the zoning where you live these sort of vehicle storage is a citable offense.

I feel sad for both her and her son. According to her Facebook page she was sober for 19 months 3 days before the incident and was getting custody of her son in just a few days. It seemed she must have struggled with some sort of addiction in the past. It seemed she was getting her life back in order before this very bad decision. I really hope that this will sober her up and that she'll get her act together, for both her son and herself.

I like 436's comment and would probably like 436 quite well if I met them, but they just do not in any way, shape, or form even begin to comprehend an addict's mentality. To an addict, if you can afford baby food, then you can definitely afford your drug of choice instead, and if you can't quite afford drug's, then your kid can't really be that hungry, unless they are old enough do sell as a prositute to get you drug money - maybe there will even be enough money left over to buy them a little food.

On my street where I park for work Aero Camino, it is way worse!
One company, ValleyCrest Landscaping, has a huge parking lot...for their red trucks. Every morning they have their 40-50 out of town vehicles bringing workers park on our street and all the parking for other businesses is gone by 7:30AM.
Meanwhile all day, their huge parking lot sits there empty and locked up. They don't even have a proper office building, just a small construction trailer on the lot.
I have complained to the city but apparently there is nothing they can do. And it's not just ValleyCrest, every business on the street is getting into the act ...very frustrating. We have taken to putting extra cars as placeholders for spots now!

630 has it wrong, 649 basically has it right, though rules vary from city to city. Commercial vehicles get some special priviledges to go with their expensive license plates (like being allowed to use commercial loading zones), but they also face some special restrictions (can't park on the street in residential areas for very long). If your plumber needs all day to fix your leaks, technically he is required to park on your driveway/lawn/whatever or keep moving every few hours. I used to work as a plumber's helper (no, not that kind!) in the area and I recall that Santa Barbara city can be prettty sticky about this rule, though SB county was a lot more flexible.

If you like the piece but it needs work, I would go to Ken's Upholstery on Milpas Street. He redid 2 chairs of mine: workmanship was good, price was good, I was happy with the whole thing. Two good old chairs became new!

Different watersheds. Wildlife use the creeks to move around the city and the San Antonio Cr flows towards the Goleta Slough while the Arroyo Burro Cr is fed by the San Roque Cyn watershed among others. It's very interesting if you follow the green belts from the mountains to the ocean on Google Maps... them's the wildlife superhighways: few humans around and plenty of cover.

It would be great to see indefinite driver's license suspensions for this type of offender - prove to the court that you're clean and sober for a few years, get back a provisional license that allows you to commute to work, and perhaps a few other limited activities. Do well with that for a few years, then you get to apply for a full license again. Why screw around with a severe druggie/drunk driver? you know that they will eventually inflict irrevesible harm, even if it is just wrecking some bystander's car that they cannot afford to replace.

Nature Boy: The city was sued over the two hour commercial parking rule, so they no longer enforce it. I have been told this twice, by two separate police officers. The 72 hour law is what they enforce.

If you want cheap you get cheap. Pool equipment is not cheap to make especially if you want it to run every day for years to come. If you don't care that it'll burn out or break down next year or the next go cheap.

Rori's ice cream is to die for. I've had samples at Lazy Acres and bought several containers there before they opened their store at the 'Cito Von's mall. Their ingredients are top notch and often are ordered from clear across the globe.... not your run of the mill flavourings you get in other ice creams. Yes it costs more and is certainly worth more. Rori is an awesome cook (as well as a wonderful person) and anyone who lets a term like "artisanal" turn them off trying some delicious foods is only limiting their own pleasures and experiences... more for the rest of us I suppose.

And....if the word is applied to food, then it is guaranteed to be extra bland, extra tough and chewy, extra dry, and every foo-foo backslapper know-it-all will stand in lines stretching around the corner to be seen eating it. For example, La Super Rica is the epitome of an "artisanal" Mexican restaurant.

Contact the Downtown Parking office of the City. Since residents on your block have to have either a resident sticker or a guest pass (only 1-2 allowed) something may be amiss. I know that the vans were towed a few weeks ago (witnessed this first-hand on a Sunday) - the owner(s) left the vans past the 72 hr limit. BTW - have you tried to talk to the owner(s) - maybe they have a driveway and can park off street. Most of the houses on W. Cota do, and you may find that they may be willing to free up a space or two for people who have only one car. If they do have parking stickers then they can park anywhere in that stickers' area - and may not know that. But check first - they have to be posted on the street side of the vehicle at all times.
