State senate calls for Highway 101 ... |
2013-05-25 12:12 PM |

Maybe if this is done, Caltrans will start picking up the litter that accumulates in the medians and on the roadsides. Even when the Adopt a Highway volunteers do their work, the bags stay on the roadsides for weeks. SB especially has a very littered section of 101 so if this 'honor' brings more attention to the poor maintenance, that might be a positive.

I thought I heard she might have been hit, they said it once so I wasn't sure if I'm not sure I won't say. Fist I heard that she was stuck in traffic then I heard "hit" but only once and so faint over the scanner I questioned it so I didn't put it up. I hope that wasn't her we used to have an old woman like that walking around downtown 20 or so years ago.

Why are people posting where to find the answer elsewhere rather than just answering it? Here: A man in a vehicle with an improvised explosive device hit a barricade at Vandenberg Air Force Base around 6 PM Friday night. Law enforcement officials say the man smelled of marijuana and told base security he had an improvised explosive device on his vehicle. Law enforcement officials say found an improvised explosive device in his car. The man was arrested. The nearby Vandenberg Middle School was evacuated. The students had returned from field trip when the incident occurred. They were taken to the Lompoc Police Station.

Not always sometimes little boys and girls find mommy and daddys guns laying around the parent might think theres going to be a revolution or something too many long hairs walking around. They want to be able to get their gun quick so they leave em everywhere..Then theres the mommy and daddy that teach their kids about guns and little Johnny or Susie gets angry at some kid or teacher or school and "Blam! Blam! Blam! " So you see it's SNOT Always about gangs.

“Pit bull” dog owners are no different than other dog owners; the overwhelming majority love and care for their pets in a responsible manner, which includes proper maintenance, control, and containment of their dogs. There are millions of “pit bull” dog owners across the United States who live peacefully and unremarkably with their family pets. They are neighbors, family, friends, public servants, and valued members of the community. They are not the exception; they are the rule.

Channel Island Foxes Back in Action... |
2013-05-25 11:06 AM |
|
About 6 months ago, I posted some pictures of critters at the SB zoo and a few people chimed in on how horrible zoos are. They probably didn't realize that the SB zoo was involved in programs like reintroducing the CI fox back in to its native habitat. For some critters, zoos are the species last hope. Man brought in non-natives in the Channel Islands, man removed the non-natives. The foxes will find their equilibrium as long as man doesn't interfere. As for "slaughtering" pigs in a non humane way, a well placed shot is virtually instant death for small game.

Try knit shops other than Cardigans. There's Loop & Leaf downtown, Roxanne's Wish and A Dream in Carp, etc. $5.00 an hour is just plain disrespectful and and affront to a knitter. I'm surprised it was even suggested, below minimum wage??? If you want it to look well done and last generations, paid good money for both the wool and the knitter!!

Not a chance at Storke or Patterson post offices. And, I agree, it is a great place for cards, wrappings, magazines and books. Too bad the rent became unbearable. It was not for lack of business. They survived through the great recession, just now getting a little better (no thanks to the politicians). It was the large increase in rent coming due when their lease is up shortly, that forced the closure.

So THIS is what our elected officals do with their work week...(?) Don't look into welfare fraud or reform, which is costing us BILLIONS each year, or how to deal with illegal immigration that plagues our State- No, those are too politically uncorrect to deal with... Maybe they can spend their next session on changing the colors and design of our State flag; I'm sure it would be more politically correct to incorporate Red, Green and White...

Is it because business went down, or because rents went up? Often a successful business goes under not because of bad business or bad management but because long-term leases expire and they are unable to re-negotiate. Small gift/news shops like that are a tough business model unless rents are very reasonable.

The hyper "2A" crowd that threatens violence, the corporate NRA, and the uber libertarian/anarchists are indignant, but the law doesn't let just anyone own a machine gun, or an RPG launcher. There are limits on carrying an AK47 on the public streets. True, unless they break, guns don't kill people. But people kill people with guns all the time. Pit bulls today are like assault weapons. Many owners don't use them in that way, but in gang/thug country, too many do to take the risk. Too many breed irresponsibly. Too many train for fighting. Look at the bite-and-run stories in this thread. Other breeds can be vicious killers, too, but pit bulls have earned their reputation here and overseas.

Another long time appreciated store vanishes, another victim to progress. The front page Montecito branch closed some time ago. I remember the Calle Real branch as The Hungry Eye, before the present owners bought the business. No doubt the trend of rapidly dropping sales in cards is due to electronic cards. Plus cards seem to have become more and more expensive. We lost three large Hallmark stores, The Paper Star, and the Mesa Post Office and shop has gone too. Probably others I do not know about. We lost Hallmark near us in La Cumbre Plaza and Papyrus moved in, but the cards are so expensive. A beautiful store but, as usual there, well out of my price range.

even the professionals struggle to truly identify the breed: 1. DNA analysis failed to confirm pit bull-type breeds in the pedigree in more than half of the dogs identified as pit bulls by shelter staff at the time of the study. 2. One in 5 dogs genetically identified as pit bulls were missed by shelter staff 3. One in 2 dogs labeled pit bulls by shelter staff lacked DNA breed signatures for pit bull terrier-type breeds. 4. Lack of consistency among shelter staff in breed assignment suggests that visual identification of pit bulls is unreliable. 5. Focusing on other attributes of dogs such as personality, behavior, and history instead of breed may help predict safety of individual dogs towards people and other animals.³ 6. Public safety may be better preserved by recognition and mitigation of risk factors for dog attacks and on identification and management of individual dangerous dogs, rather than on exclusion of particular breeds. http://www.nationalcanineresearchcouncil.com/uploaded_fil es/tinymce/Maddies%20Breed%20ID%20Poster.pdf

NP article says the Roosevelt fundraising money will be used for teacher aides, a resident art teacher and keeping up the computer lab and music program. No mention of paying for paper for the classroom as claimed here, and exactly the same list of extras voters were told would be covered by the last round of parcel taxes. Does any one keep their stories straight? How much does it cost to send kids who are interested to the after-school Purple Crayon private art classes, compared to paying for a resident art teacher or is it the same person?

At least they're not elbowing their way into overcrowded parks and clogging up the roadways like 99.99% of other RVers out this weekend. Good for them. GILBERT, how is allowing RVers one beach any different than hordes of beach-goers covering it up with beach towels and umbrellas? When does having a child entitle you to special access? Please don't put this on your son who I would bet learned early in pre-school or kindergarten that to be first in line you have to get up before everyone else does.

Forget pointing a finger at or judging your neighbours the problem rests firmly on your side of the fence. The tree rats clearly prefer what you have to offer. Step 1 is identifying the problem. Step 2 is asking for professional help. If you are sensitive to the collateral damage done by poisons (good on you) ask about other strategies employed by eradicators. And please remember that no fix is permanent. You may kill off this batch but if you have a neat and well maintained and landscaped yard you may be providing more food for them than your neighbours and they will be back.

@522P: I can't agree more. I'm still amazed how, with virtually no notice to or comment from the community, the casino people were able to fast-track Caltrans into naming Highway 154 "The Chumash Highway," complete with signage to that effect. A more appropriate name might have been "The Highway to Poverty."

Geez, I just don't get the people who recommend calling some government agency on your neighbor. You really think the first recourse in this situation is to have a nosy agent demand entry onto private property, then fine the neighbor, and then notify their sister agencies for any other "violations" they happen to see? Absolutely nothing good can come from such passive aggressive snitching and it will lead to years of neighborly animosity. Please act like a mature neighbor and discuss this directly.

101 is already 3 or 4 other things (CA Missions Trail, The King's Highway, etc.). How many names and signs do we need to slap on it? Like the others commenting here, I'd rather politicians spend their time and our money on fixing some of our numerous problems, rather than more posturing.

Have to agree with 217 and some of the others above. The attitude of some of these owners (one of whom is basically threatening to shoot people) is maybe scarier than these dogs. I "like" dogs in general, but this weird mentality which identifies one's personality with one's pet or claims kinship with it ("my family," really?) is something I've only encountered here in SB. I suspect that such attitudes increase the anti-dog (of whatever breed) sentiments of many.

They did this earlier in the week behind my house which backs to cath oaks, I called Stow Co,the manager lives there at end of La Patera. He, Dale, eventually got back to me; they r spraying a mixture of fertilizer and pesticide. The pesticide is called Epi-mek which u can find a lot on-line about. It is toxic, particular mention aquatic and mammals. I am most concerned that they spray this at a time when my children r not walking to school but it would be even better if it was non-toxic. DRiFt is the big issue. Last year they did it when it was windy.Which Possibly shouldve been a fine for. I also spoke to FAA, apparently NO requirement of notifying public, which I find really hard to swallow. Dale offered to notify me, but we didn't solidify how that would work, and I am sure the whole neighborhood would like notification. We need the news media to look into this more, some good old fashion investigative reporting that can lead to an improved community.

All dogs are what we make of them; they never forget how they have been treated and by whom. Dogs that are loved, well cared for, and feel included in the "pack" CONSISTENTLY, are great. Neglected dogs , or dogs that are confused by a lack of consistency in their lives develop all kinds of behavioral problems. Then there is the ignorant, ego-driven dolt who trains a dog (usually a pit) to fight/be mean. Only a fraction of a percent of dogs have a screw loose, it is always the owners causing the problem. Please don't blame the breed.

All these extra signs naming highways, mostly for dead politicians, is annoying visual clutter and a waste of taxpayer dollars. The state should put up a map webpage and go crazy naming everything it wants for every dead politician, LEO, veteran, and other worthy recipient - but there's no need to put up physical signs in the real world.

Channel Island Foxes Back in Action... |

So, they slaughtered the pigs, in a non humane way, they removed the golden eagles in a humane way, they bred the foxes in captivity and released them to multiply on the island. Lucky for the cute foxes, they have no predators and they are multiplying at the speed of light. Pretty soon they will run out of food and start starving. Or are too cute to let them starve and they will decide to introduce a fast reproducing type of ground squirrels for them to feast on? I hate when man plays God an messes I nature! I think feral pigs should have been hunted for food.

22 caliber is very safe as long as it is a shot load not a bullet. Far saver than a BB gun or some slingshots. Shot load has a very short range (<50yds vs. 1 mile), zero ricochette potential and are soft sounding rather than the crack of a slug exiting the barrel. Extremely effective!

They are natural killers and naturally aggressive, even long term pets have been known to turn on babies and owners. Nobody was ever killed by a beagle right? Some dogs are genetic killers. Some are not. My homeowner insurance company will not even insure a pit bull. They must know something about 'risk'. Same for domestic wolves. Pit bulls, wolves, bad idea. If your ego needs your pet to be a weapon, get some help. There nothing a pit bull can give you that a nice sweet breed couldn't unless you need to feel like a bad ass walking around with your dog. I say ban them. Period. Guess I am entitled to my opinion just like everybody else.

444, thanks for the explanation. I always think that all teachers at daycare schools need to have very tough screening that includes their spouses and ex-spouses and children as that invariably is where most of the problems arise. It's a lot to ask of these teachers, I know, but if it weren't for custody disputes and divorce, most daycare centers wouldn't need as much security.

I have another take. As the spots have become a commodity , what happens to regular beach goers access when every square inch is rented out? There are a couple of stretches where no day use parking is allowed for miles. " Daddy , where is the beach and how do we get there?" " Well son , the beach is just on the other side of the wall of Winnebagos and we aren't allowed to go there".

Oh. And wool yarn is pretty darn costly. Go have a look at the yarn sold at Craft Essentials, near Turnpike Vons. You might be better off putting a "Wanted: Your great condition old wool throw. Must look similar to this:" And put that ad on Craigslist. OR---you could shop on eBay. I bet there are loads and loads of cool afghans you'd like, for sale on eBay.

I would put an ad in "Wanted" section on Craigslist. Something like this: "Wanted: Knitter to duplicate beloved wool afghan/throw. We will buy the yarn, you do the knitting. Expert knitters only need apply. We will pay cash." Then be sure and see some samples of the knitter's work, before hiring him/her. Settle on a fair price. It takes time to knit, so be prepared to pay at least $5.00 per hour for the labor. This could be costly: $200, at least. (Unless the pattern is something super simple and quite open knit.)

@299. You have to have inhaled airborne particles of rodent urine and poop, over a period of time, in order to be infected with Hanta Virus. The Virus particles are mainly found in attics, basements and old barns, where the rodents have lived for long periods of time, with no one ever having cleaned up the area. Deer mice, cotton and rice rats and the white-footed mouse are only known carriers of Hanta Virus in U.S. There are no known cases of infection attributed to Wood rats within the U.S. OP: PLEASE don't use poison! You need to install a Barn owl nesting box ASAP. This will reduce greatly your rodent problem. A Barn owl eats approx 730 rodents per year. This means voles and shrews, as well as rats and mice. You will have FREE rodent control (less the price of the owl box------check out the guy on Craigslist in Farm & Garden section; he will install one for you). Ojai Raptor Center (in Ojai!) will put you on their list for a free Barn owl, if you like). Yes, there are wood rats in SB. I have them in my yard at times. They are never a problem in my house. You need to keep your food in containers, in your pantry or in the fridge. DO NOT leave out dog/cat food. Be sure and get those holes plugged up in your house. That will really help.
