SpaceX Falcon 9 Rocket Launch Video

Thank you for the kind words. I am happy you enjoyed the video.

I highly recommend following Space Flight Now which is a wonderful free service that shows upcoming space launches. When you see a Vandenberg launch on the schedule, be sure to mark your calendar.

Just be aware that launches are often delayed or rescheduled.

Here is the link to Space Flight Now

The Westside is a very big area !!! It would be VERY helpful to put the cross streets, or something that would indicate where you heard the gun shots.

We see c17s flying practice drops into fort hunter liggett near king city. They'll fly in low over the ranch and you won't hear them until they're 300 feet overhead. Scares the beejeezus out of us if we dont see them on the approach. They'll do a wing wave at the kids if we wave. Super cool.

Gunshots Heard on Westside

2017-01-16 07:55 PM

I think they would have been louder if it was gunshots, but I don't know how far away they were from me. I heard two pops in a row. The west side really echos and this didn't echo much for me. A gunshot tends to linger in the air.
Kids play with fireworks in all neighborhoods so I wouldn't be surprised. Heck my friends did that on the Westside 15 years ago with dry ice in a water bottle. We thought it was so funny because people would think it's gunshots on the west side. If Edhat was around we probably would have been in it:)

Plant Identification

2017-01-16 07:54 PM

Pittosporum tobira, common name tobira(lets agree to use common local nomenclature, not google or bing, K?) dwarf form P. wheeleri, Wheelers dwarf pittosporum. Biggest one I've seen in SB i recall is on DLV west side of street, maybe at Cajun Kitchen. Can't recall exactly. About 10-12' pruned into a tree form. Usually seen as a smaller hedge like planting to 6'. Not to be confused with P. undulatum which tends to be larger, many 12-15' hedges in Montecito. There was once a glorious 35' diameter x 25'-30' tall specimen at county general hospital at Camino del Remidio, not sure if it still exists.

Potential Credit Card Scam

2017-01-16 07:36 PM

I posted a comment in May about our credit card being compromised at Mesa Fuel Depot. Since then, I've only paid inside when buying gas at this location. I did so yesterday, paid inside, and today someone tried to use my credit card info to purchase items online. I was notified by my card company, they'd put a stop on the purchase because they detected it was fraudulent. I have no proof that it was someone at Mesa Fuel Depot, but that's the third time we've had to cancel a card within a day or two of going there. Third time's a charm, won't go back again. There's definitely a pattern here. Will contact police and let them know.

Dead Zebra Found on San Simeon Beac...

2017-01-16 06:23 PM

That zebra (or is it a zebra hybrid?) should have been taken to the rendering plant after they skinned it, rather than just tossing its carcass into a creek - disgusting! A few years back, my neighbors had killed and skinned a raccoon, and they did eat it. Where you come from really determines how you look at animals. Case in point, the Yulin dog festival where they butcher perfectly healthy, and some not so healthy dogs for food and snacks....and I guess they do the same thing to cats as well. In their culture this is perfectly fine, acceptable, and so on. There are plenty of places where horses are looked at as food - we have to look no further than one of my favorite countries: France. No wonder why the world hates the US!

Cachuma Levels

2017-01-16 06:12 PM

923-During every drought I have wondered why Cachuma was not excavated with heavy equipment and dump trucks, dredging not being needed when the lake bottom is exposed. (dredging is expensive and dry soil hauls well) You answered the question; disturbing mercury/heavy metals that would then mix with the reservoir water upon recharge. Thank you.
The bad news is that Cachuma gets smaller as growth increases demand. A full Cachuma does not mean what it did years ago, yet building continues.........

Dead Zebra Found on San Simeon Beac...

2017-01-16 05:43 PM

Geez, reading is for dummies: Fish and Game said the zebra died of natural causes and floated down the river into the ocean. To repeat: "died of natural causes". Now, after dying it may have been skinned on the ranch, or may have been skinned on the beach. My guess is that it drowned in the creek and was skinned on the beach by a passer-by. The Hearst cowboys are a pretty good bunch and they'd never throw a dead zebra in the creek.

@996 and @994, from a quick google search you can see that we spent 800k in 2015 (found a nice article on noozhawk). Here we are not two years later. I did read that the cost for a total replacement was 20 million so it makes complete sense that spending 800k every five years is the more rational way to go.

Maybe for the next 800k we can get a better solution? I think it is pretty clear that this interlocking paver nonsense is just that. Surely for 800k these "traffic engineers" can come up with something that can last more than a year or two?

It's really sad that there are so many people here that can't read. Lots of opinions but scant little in the way of FACTS. I appreciate 964's comment and agree that tearing it all out and rebuilding from scratch, as any Dutch engineer would suggest at a minimum, would present the best solution once and for all. But it's cheaper to patch it up every couple of years with a year in between to go from bad to worse. And it's easier to get funding for a patch job than a total rebuild (anyone living on or working with a budget knows this intimately).

Many seem to think a coupla million bucks gets you a new bridge/ underpass ... think again.

Castillo Underpass Question

@964 I distinctly remember the press releases and other official communications that touted this "solution" as one that would last. They absolutely had money to fix the issue but what they implemented does not seem to be much of a solution at all.

I think people are frustrated because this really isn't hard. There is no reason to reinvent the wheel here - there are proven solutions out there.

@964 - Not sure Money is the issue. They just invested well north of 6 figures 2 years ago in the latest attempt to resolve the issue. Or maybe they should have waited until additional funds became available to address the issues, rather than throwing good money after a bad fix.

As a retired Co, Construction Engr. I can tell you that Caltrans built the State St. and Garden St. under crossings ( the proper name ) without any help from the Dutch without any problems. The issue is simple, you can pour concrete under water and it is not difficult to design a new one. The problem is MONEY, not incompetence so why don't you all get over it. There is no money to tear it all out and start from square one and I don't know if and when it will ever be available.

Commonly known as pittosporums (or, more ambiguously, "cheesewoods") are trees and shrubs growing to 2–30 m tall. The flowers have five petals and are often sweetly scented. The fruit bursts on ripening to release the numerous seeds which are coated with a sticky resinous substance.

It isn't designed to last, by any means, this is an expected failure. It is the cheapest fix for now, and cheapest fix to fix as it fails. Cost analyses often result in this.

At this point I'm with 955, the money it costs to hire a Dutch engineer consult or someone well-versed in those practices may be well worth it.

Power Outage After Car Crashes Into...

2017-01-16 09:22 AM

The lady driving the car had "veered" off the road. Josh Holloway (the actor from Lost and The Colony) was first on scene to pull her from the car. I helped him with her across the street to a safe location and waited for help to arrive. In fact, and this is the oddest coincidence, my wife and I paused "Lost" to go run some errands and within minutes I'm helping one of the main characters with this lady. He was great and took action so fast... it reminded me of his character roles. He then told me (laughingly) that I should give "The Colony" a shot... and we will. So, the nice lady was safe and received only minor injuries and we all went on about our errands. When my wife and I got home from the store, we finished watching the episode of Lost we had paused before leaving the house. All I can say is that the universe does some interesting stuff... take care and drive safe everyone. THANKS for your input after this comment, but that's all I'm going to say about this accident.

It is fantastic that Cachuma is looking better. Does anyone wonder why at the peak of the drought cachuma was never dredged? Dredging like they do at the harbor would eliminate all those polluting truck runs. The mud could used to creat new islands and landscapes at cachuma, but most importantly it would add storage capacity. I was told the they don't want to disturb the heavy minerals in the sediment. Wait a minute, but it is ok for us to drink them?. Think cinnabar aka mercury. So no we've done nothing except that we are now at point where people may have their water shut off. Sad ??
