January 12, 2007 - Ed Presses for an Opinion

This week was a busy week for the news on the News-Press. The National Labor Review Board held a two-day hearing to hear arguments about whether or not the union vote by the paper’s employees was legitimate. The case got significant coverage from the Independent, the Daily Sound, and local blogs. Links to much of the coverage were placed on the Edhat news page and included in our emails, but these links did not receive nearly as much attention as the links on our site to articles about the confusing elevator buttons at Ralph’s and the torn-down movie theater on Hollister.

So, we were wondering if the story about Wendy versus Santa Barbara, the one that has hung on for months and months, is finally losing steam. In order to find out, we asked the audience – dedicated subscribers of edhat.com to be precise. From our survey, it seems as if there are two groups in Santa Barbara – those who don’t like Wendy McCaw and are still interested in the story, and those who don’t like Wendy McCaw but are tired of the story. She is definitely not well liked here in her hometown.

It didn’t seem like many people cared much about the legal battle over unionization. Most people are just upset because for no good reason, she destroyed a good paper that hired good people.

Well, who are we to summarize all the responses? You can read them yourself!

The Dog, who hasn’t had much use for newspaper since the early training days, was asked to pick a winner from the selection of subscribers who submitted their comments. She opened up the web page and searched for keywords of her favorite things – words like bone, cheese and beach. The first hit was ASRAAF who used the world ‘Sleep’ in his comment. ASRAAF wins a t-shirt.
