Thoughts on Post Office Closure

2012-04-27 10:42 PM

The Nopalitos PO sucks. There's no way there's enough PO Boxes for all those at the main post office. Its major advantage, if it is one, is the proximity to the homeless area, several blocks from the rescue mission, several from Casa Esperanza. There are not many, only one or two, begging outside. The parking is usually okay, except when it's busy; the staff is usually unfriendly. (If the attitude of the staff at the Nopalitos branch, with some exceptions, is typical of other post office staff, it's no wonder the PO is closing down across the country.) The Milpas branch was much more a) convenient to the non-homeless and b) a friendlier place to get one's mail, but it closed.

More Nimbys backed by ideological interests of a few and people sign these things without really understanding the true implications of forcing landowners to do what they want to land that is not theirs. In the meantime the land goes feral and just sits there unused by the community that could use open space, more parks and amenities in that kind of neighborhood. Farmland is one thing to preserve, empty land unusable for decades is another.

Just a bunch of morons running the Post Office. Full investigation should commence immediately to find out how the money is spent. Follow the money and you will find the answer. Plus, if you make it difficult to use the PO, then people will find some other method. And, once the Main Office moves, they will NEVER go back. It will never go back to what it was.

Plastic trash in oceans 'vastly' underestimated

His research on the theory, with Tobias Kukulka of the University of Delaware, suggests that on average, plastic debris in the ocean may be 2.5 times higher than estimates using surface-water sampling. In high winds, the volume of plastic trash could be underestimated by a factor of 27, the researchers report this month in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.

Plastic waste can wreak havoc on an ecosystem, harming fish and other organisms that ingest it, possibly even degrading a fish's liver; the trashy bits also make nice homes for bacteria and algae that get carried to other areas of the ocean where they could be invasive or cause other problems, the researchers noted.

In 2010, the team collected water samples at various depths in the North Atlantic Ocean. "Almost every subsurface tow we took had plastic in the net," Proskurowski told LiveScience, adding that they used a specialized tow net that isolated certain layers of the water, so it would only open at a specific depth and close before being pulled up.

Boy Scouts of America is appealing ...

2012-04-27 07:33 PM

Its a shame that all the good work done by the Boy Scouts of America over the last century is ignored when this unfortunate sideshow comes up in the news. Yes, they've had problems with some of the leaders in the past, but they also have bent over backwards to root out these predator types.

They give very specific training to any adults who work with the boys to hopefully prevent any untoward behavior. Those of you that are BSA haters don't really know what positive character-building experiences they offer to boys on their way toward adulthood.

I am a proud former Scout, as was my son. Scouting may not appeal to you, but you ought to at least learn more about it before jumping on the bandwagon of condemnation.

2012-04-27 06:16 PM

I am so sad! Such a beautiful historical landmark. In my opinion it is right up there with the Courthouse and the Mission. These are the beautiful buildings that make you proud to live in SB not to mention the convenience it offered the businesses and those who live and work in the downtown area.

Since it is an historical landmark, it will be interesting to see what will happen to it. Hopefully it won't be allowed to run down. I think it would make a wonderful history museum. Be nice if the Historical Society could purchase it and use it instead of the other space they now occupy. I know "dream on".

OK, I admit I felt a little sad when I heard Taco Bell on DLV was closing. Change is inevitable, but not always good.

I have a P.O. box at this location and I don't want to have to change my mailing address. I want to hear the stories about what happened to Milpas/Nopalitos customers. I would like the new building to be as convenient to my home/work as the existing building. I would like to know whether I should be changing my bills and magazines to my home address (had rented a P.O. box for the convenience during an apartment move). Also, I am almost wishing I had chosen the Victoria Court post office instead, although that wasn't going to turn out any differently. Worried. Eager for facts and a timeline.

WE are paying for attorneys to represent these punks - and those attorneys are using BS tactics like not allowing past criminal records to be used as evidence so the perp gets more time.

The only way to beat these punks is with force and humility. Make them ashamed of who they are and they will change.

Strong-Arm Robbery, Public's Help S...

2012-04-27 04:41 PM

We have some brave and noble people posting here and if the creep was beating up on the 70yr old maybe most of us who were physically capable would come to the rescue, but not sure I would risk my life for a computer or purse theft when more than likely the person committing the crime has a gun/knife that they know how to use.

Maybe another lesson here is, if someone tries to steal something from you don't resist it's not worth getting killed over. Things can be replaced, but your life and health can't. Ok I know that sounds cowardly, but sometimes it's also smart. Druggies are desperate and will do anything for that next fix.

For sure I would scream(yes I'm a woman) and make a huge effort to attract attention AND dial 911 and stay and help the person till the police showed up.

DUI/Drivers License Checkpoint

2012-04-27 03:31 PM

I would agree with 293. It would be beneficial to view the statistics on cars stopped versus DUI arrests. I'm not opposed to checkpoints and am definitely in favor of efficiently identifying drunk drivers, however, would like to see some support that these checkpoints do produce results.

I've passed through a few of these checks and there are sometimes 10-15 officers assessing two lanes of traffic. The DUI campaign always makes headlines, but is it actually working enough to support the expense in having so many officers sitting around?

There has definitely been an uptick lately in unsafe driving and a lack of police presence and I'd like to see these officers spread out across the city protecting us. I do appreciate the efforts of the officers on the force who are dedicated to protecting us and do it by making sound and logical decisions about how to best achieve the effort.

The county would not reduce the tax assessment for the Biltmore when Ty Warner submitted a request. Ty purchased the Biltmore way over the value you could ever make any money on but he wanted it. Caruso bought the remaining 90% he did not own in 2010. If it was over priced he should have negotiated a reduce price for the remaining 90%.

Users of the main post office need to be very careful. We had a box at the old Milpas station. When they moved that one to Nopalitos Way, we were assured both verbally and in writing that the transfer would be seamless. In fact, quite a few customers lost their box numbers and were assigned new ones. The local postmaster was less than useless and blamed mysterious forces in Santa Clarita using the stock excuse incompetent bureaucrats fall back on these days - "software." Meanwhile, postal customers had to eat the costs of reprinting letterhead, labels, etc., and confusion with inbound mail. Business customers especially need to monitor this downtown move closely - along with their attorneys.

204- your overly generous logic is part of the problem. No change will happen for the better when we coddle these punks. Their parents are already living proof of this.

The State Law concerning grafitti violations sounds pretty tough, but you'll notice they all include the words "up to...." for the sentences. That basically means that a soft judge doesn't have to apply any punishment whatsoever to the offenders. It merely defines the upper ceiling of what he/she COULD impose on them.

I say we take the vagueness out of the law and put some real teeth into it with mandatory sentencing. I've never heard of a meaningful sentence being handed down in a grafitti case. Lets put an end to this trashing of our town and state. We're not dealing with creative artwork, folks.

That is not what the victim said. She said the car in the other land had stopped, she saw the truck, made eye contact with the driver and believed he would stop (as is normal when you're in a crosswalk and all the other traffic has stopped) and then proceeded to cross.

This driver hit-and-run, which is the action of a GUILTY person who knows they did something wrong. If it weren't for the eyewitnesses who got the partial plate, and the SBPD officer who tracked him down, would still be out on the road endangering more people.

Stop blaming the victim!!!! .

You say 190P. Dr. Serban did not make "mistakes" as such.

A major mistake she made was that she did not allow people who were vitally integral to a program to bring pertinent information to the table. She thought she was collaborating when she met with people but she did not provide an atmosphere of open dialogue. She often gathered information not collaboratively but to feed her particular desire. She misrepresented information to the public. Thus, she was generally not trusted by most staff & faculty & public who had interaction with her. That is not good in a college president. I'd say that was a mistake.

You say "Unfortunately, she had absolutely no people skills" - she smiled and could make easy conversation. It's just that she was not trustworthy in her powerful role.
She is smart, but not in terms of relationship, so necessary in that job.

Some say it's like the old adage, "If you have to ask, you can't afford it." Fact is tho, it's all about priorities. Some people have a couple of upscale coffees daily, and others have an incredible short flight once a week. Some small planes can have total costs similar to cars ($0.50 per mile). The total operating cost for our plane is $120 per hour, and can be divided among the people aboard. We took our terrified sister on a flight at her request, but in a few minutes her fears had vanished and she asked me to circle her workplace. There are several businesses at SBA that do intro flights, and many pilots like me also enjoy trying to get people hooked on the joys and advantages of flying in small planes.

I just went to the post office on Patterson today to mail packages. First of all, it doesn't open until 10 AM, so I decided to use the automatic postal meter. However, the deposit bin for packages was broken, so I had to come back to mail them. The lines are always very long. A 20-25 minute wait is not unusual. Why would anyone continue to choose to mail anything at the post office when faced with that kind of wait.

They probably put something in there that has paper, like wine bottles, and the paper fell off onto the heat rings when they got wet, and then caught fire when it was on the dry/heat option. That happened once at a place where I worked. And at home I have had 2 ocassions where my teen put an empty pizza box in the oven, no clue why, and I didn't know it and pre-heated the oven to cook and the box caught fire. After the first time and the reaming I gave them I was shocked they did it again and sad that I now have to look in the oven every time before I turn it on. Also, it's too bad that the Edison repair trucks are no longer based up here but are based in Ventura/Oxnard. There seem to be so many electrical type emergencies where firefighters are having to stand around for long periods of time waiting for Edison's arrival.

PLEASE READ THIS FOR THE REAL STORY

In 2006 Congress passed the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act, which requires that the Postal Service pre-fund 100 percent of its health benefits for 75 years. Not just that, but the USPS was given only 10 years to accomplish the task. That's something no other organization (public or private) is required to do. Prior to the 2006 act, USPS generated a profit; now, with the additional $5.5 billion a year it must pre-fund, it's facing a budget shortfall.

Not surprisingly, the 2006 legislation was favored by industry lobbyists who wanted to privatize the mail industry. Not only did the bill add the burden of pre-funding benefits, it also made it more difficult to make additional funds, prohibiting the USPS from branching out into non-postal services. Previously, the Postal Service had experimented with offering services like online bill pay, but abandoned those efforts under pressure from Congress. Private companies like FedEx have poured money into lobbying Washington, giving them influence over rules affecting the USPS as well as netting them government contracts.

The argument goes, however, that in the age of email the postal service is a relic, unused and losing money. But the communities hit hardest by closures are rural, where residents may live miles from the nearest town and rely on the postal service for deliveries. In addition, Reuters found that many of those who would be affected by closure live in areas with limited or no broadband Internet connectivity, something the Postal Service did not take into account when reviewing which offices to shutter.

Facing a budget gap, it's easy to understand why the Postal Service is putting the closure of post offices on the table. But the agency is facing a burden unmatched by private competitors. The move fits in with the GOP ideal of privatization — but it could also leave millions of Americans with decreased access to mail service. The Senate may have bought some time on post office closures, but it's crucial that people speak out in support of this service that many Americans depend on.

This is the beginning of the end for the Post Office. They have been losing so much money in recent years - soon they will stop Saturday delivery. If the Feds refuse to subsidize them then they will continue to decrease services until they only deliver maybe 3-4 days a week. I hardly get any mail now that isn't junk or unsolicited. All my bills come by email and are paid online. Much better than trying to remember when bills are due and sending them in on time, and remembering to buy ever increasing stamps. If I worked for them I would try to retire before the layoffs begin.

Here's the state law on graffiti:

Every person who maliciously defaces with graffiti or other inscribed material with respect to any property not his or her own is guilty of vandalism:

If the amount of defacement is four hundred dollars ($400) or more, vandalism is punishable by imprisonment in the state prison up to one year or by a fine up to ten thousand dollars ($10,000) or both.

If the amount of defacement is less than four hundred dollars ($400), vandalism is punishable by imprisonment in a county jail up to one year or by a fine up to one thousand dollars ($1,000), or by both.

If the amount of defacement is less than four hundred dollars ($400), and the defendant has been previously convicted, vandalism is punishable by imprisonment of up to one year, or by a fine of up to five thousand dollars ($5,000), or both.

If a minor is personally unable to pay a fine levied for acts prohibited by this section, the parent of that minor shall be liable for payment of the fine.

If the defacement threatens violence because of race, color, ancestry, or national origin, the offenders will receive longer sentences and will be ordered to pay fines of up to $10,000. If the wrongdoer is a minor, his or her parents will be strictly liable. This is true even if the parents were not negligent.

The people in the adjacent neighborhood must be so pleased to have an increase in traffic on their streets. But I guess the residents along Carpenteria Street are glad to have less traffic now. but maybe less people use the side streets to get through now that the 101 is 3 lanes all the way to Goleta? It took a long time, but that widening project seems to have achieved its goals.

There are individuals and there are issues. Graffiti is an issue & I'm thankful whenever someone is caught and punished.

I do have some compassion for the individual teenagers. No amount of community programs, beautiful beaches, or city jobs are going to transform the lives of kids who are raised in low-income homes with parents who are abusive and/or addicted to drugs & alcohol. Gangs provide family structure and a sense of support; graffiti is the twisted equivalent of washing the dishes to gain approval from mom & dad.

Yes, full of mountain lions. You can't swing a dead deer in the back country without hitting one.

2012-04-27 12:37 PM

Maybe those stings by the PD have done some good if pedestrians are not in as much danger when they are in cross-walks now. I always assume that the drivers can't see me unless we make eye contact and then I try to not dawdle as I'm crossing. I can't tell you how many times I've been on my bike approaching a green light in my direction and seen a car blow through the red on the cross street. I attribute some of that to tourists busy looking at the scenery, but maybe it is unfair to blame them.

Clearly the driver was in the wrong but the injuries suffered by the pedestrian might never go away no matter how much money she can get from his insurance company- assuming that he had insurance to start with.

I can't imagine there being many buyers for the building since due to its historical status it would be almost impossible/ cost prohibitive to significantly alter it to much and realign for a different use. If they need a smaller space couldn't they just rent out part of the building to a different fed agency and keep the building thus sparing relocation and rent costs. Also if they keep the building as a Federal property they can do whatever interior changes need to be done without local approval.

933,

Because thats the best ALTERNATIVE. Its already been proven that recycling really is a waste of energy, so why not focus on using a product that either continues to be used, or breaks down naturally?

We all forget that humans did survive for hundreds of years before plastic was created. Not to say that I hate plastic alltogether, but its turned into a perverse way for cheap manufacturing for one time use products. Ever think about the manufacturing that went into that bag, or cup, or container? How about how much it cost to ship, sort, organize, then finally sort through after it is recycled. Plastic bags main intention is short life and cheap cost, which is what makes them an issue. If it were a handful of bags it would be one thing, but at this magnitude, nature has no recourse to decompose them quick enough.

Spill a quart of oil, no big deal. 1 million people spill a quart of oil, you have a problem.

Thanks, Barron. I'm continually amazed at how well some of the telephoto shots turn out when the air's relatively clear. The airspace over the whole LA basin is busy, but as you might expect the part around LAX in particular is quite well organized. The FAA has tweaked it into a well oiled machine over the decades. Small planes like ours get low priority with ATC, so going through the special corridor over it makes for an easy transition. I haven't looked up any details about the construction, but this is Edhat so presumably someone here knows all about it. Sure makes our little terminal project seem simple and modest (and friendly!), eh?

287, yes I am willing to 'risk life and health', assuming the situation is appropriate. Obviously I'm not going to be able to do much good if 5 guys on meth with knives are robbing someone, so I would opt for 911 and making sure they know police are coming. But one guy robbing an elderly man, I can't imagine stopping to think about my 'risk'... some things are wrong, and if you don't take action instinctively, I don't know how you could sleep at night? I understand that not every citizen is equipped to deal with this kind of situation physically, but there are PLENTY of quick thinking, able-bodied boys and girls among our ˜85,000. The issue is our fear of liability and the legal system biting us for becoming involved, coupled with detachment from one another leading to selfish hesitation to 'risk life and health'. This perp was looking for an easy target. Involved community makes this kind of crime not an easy win.

Warden kills mountain lion in Sunland neighborhood

April 24, 2012 | 7:14am

A Department of Fish and Game warden shot and killed an 80-pound mountain lion after a resident spotted the big cat hiding in the bushes near her home.
It happened in the foothills below Angeles National Forest, where resident Marlene Hitt was closing her garage door Friday afternoon when she spotted the mountain lion.
"I heard a bang and looked down and saw a mountain lion run out as fast as it could," Hitt told KTLA-TV. She called 911 and when police arrived, the lion was hiding in the bushes, under a tree.
"I heard five shots and I knew they had found it," Hitt said.
Officers fired the shots to scare the animal and confine it to the area until Fish and Game arrived. But when wardens showed up, one of them fired the killing shot in the lion's head.
"It was afraid, I'm sure, but I don't think it suffered at all," Hitt said.

Officials from the California Department of Fish and Game said the warden felt shooting the animal was necessary to keep the neighborhood safe.
Weeks ago, wardens used tranquilizer darts to subdue a 400-pound bear that wandered through a La Crescenta neighborhood. Fish and Game officials said that same strategy didn't make sense for the mountain lion.
"Shooting an animal with the darts is not like in the movies," said Fish and Game warden Andrew Hughman. "You hit the animal, the animal becomes very agitated, very angry very quickly, and it doesn't just fall down and go to sleep, the drugs can take several minutes to activate."
Meanwhile, some of Hitt's neighbors were not pleased the lion was killed.
"We need these animals, if we don't have mountain lions in our local areas, we're going to have too many rabbits, too many deer, too many coyotes," said neighbor Dana Stangel. "It upsets me greatly."
But other neighbors said extreme measures should be taken when a predator gets a little too close for comfort.
"I'm just sorry it was forced to wander into a neighborhood," Hitt said.

DUI/Drivers License Checkpoint

2012-04-27 10:13 AM

I think its better to have officers patrolling.

Whenever I see anyone I honestly think is drunk I call it in immediately. The cops can only see so much, and its citizens who care enough to help them out that helps stop things like DUI's.

All the times that I have called, they have not been able to get a unit fast enough before they either park or go into some neighborhood and I lose sight. I've been on the phone with the dispatcher for 15 minutes before I even saw a unit to pull over some kids that blew through a red light leaving DP a few weeks ago. It was apparent that it was prom that night (the car had stuff all over it, which was getting thrown all over the road).

Not blaming the cops, but I just couldn't understand how there wasn't a single unit out by the DP/Winchester Canyon area on a Saturday night?

84....when I have parked in those garages there often is no one around at all. Also you are very kind to want to step into a robbery in progress and risk your own life, most of these thugs carry knives and many are high on drugs. Are you willing to risk your life and health? Of course you should immediately dial 911 and stay with the victim until help arrives and help give an accurate description of the thug. Many times when people are assaulted and robbed they are in a state of shock and not able to give a good description to police.

2012-04-27 09:50 AM

What I want to know is didn't the victim yell or something? Was there really NO one nearby to help? Seems to me this kind of crime can ONLY be thwarted by an active community... the chances of a police officer patrolling within earshot are very small compared to the chances of an able-bodied citizen nearby. If the criminal thinks that someone seeing the deed will only call the police, not try to help, his chances go way up. Similarly, if he believes that folks are able and WILLING to step up and defend one another, there would be nowhere to run = not worth the risk = gentleman goes home and sets up his new computer.
It is about doing what is right as a citizen. If we want a better, safer community, it's up to us. Stop complaining about the lack of police presence and start doing pushups!

We humans are capable of creating living Hell for ourselves and each other, including all life on the planet. We are also capable of wonderful, loving generosity and hope. I have stopped taking my daily journey to Hell (watching/listening to the news, and considering a life without Edhat too) because I don't need to know the details anymore. I had a really bad experience w/them; we were on a Montecito trail when a rider was thrown from her horse. 911 wouldn't send the fire dept directly because she couldn't find our location on her map. I told her how to get there, it's on the Thomas Guide. 911 sent the firemen to our starting point, she could find that, it would have been impossible to get to us from there w/their trucks. Luckily the pres of Montecito Trails Foundation was contacted by the fire dept and he led them to us.

I stopped at the corner and looked back to see if any one I had seen in or outside the store was walking my way. I then went a crossed the street and hung out just outside of Saks. Checked things out again. Oh and I also had pepper spray in my pocket and ready to go. I guess, yes, this is what it has come to. Where I actually have to arm myself when I go shopping. I live in a good neighborhood but I take my spray with me every time I go out walking or downtown. 204 - GET REAL!

Give us all a break and get you head out of the sand. The tagger dogs need to be severely punished when/if caught. Period.

Please note the key words here - WHEN & IF.

If the city put a priority on this scurge, put law enforcement out at night with the donated night vision goggles we'd finally see some apprehensions.

Sadly, until that ever happens, we'll have to endure the "little dogs' " markings all over our once beautiful community.

My suggestion is that we resort to street justice, because nothing else is working. We all start carrying spray cans too -- pepper spray. If you spot a tagger, let 'em have it. Heck of a disincentive... and better than a citizen's arrest, because these kids and their parents are NOT being held accountable. I've never seen one of them OR their parents out cleaning up the graffiti. Obviously, there's something wrong with our justice system when it comes to this crime.

All contacts I've had with her indicate to me that she was a very effective and good president at WVC.

I taught at SBCC as a part-time teacher several semesters in the early 1960s and moved to the greater San Jose area where I taught at West Valley College for 30 years, I am sorry to see her leaving WVC but happy that she's going to SBCC where I"m sure she'll be a great President!!!

DUI/Drivers License Checkpoint

2012-04-27 08:39 AM

I'm totally in favor of safety checkpoints -- for DUI, for talking on cell phones, for safety violations, for unregistered or uninsured drivers. We need the protection from idiots who think the rules don't apply to them, and if we end up with some additional revenue to boot, great! The laws apply to everyone equally, and if you're so stupid as to violate them when there is a pre-announced (!) checkpoint, then you really need to be off the road.

Mortgage Lawyer Referral

2012-04-27 08:35 AM

As with most issues, there are even more than two sides to this story. Some folks bought at high prices out of fear that they would be shut out by the upward home price trend. Some bought to flip for profit. Many of those were real estate or lending professionals who knew just how easy it was to game the system. Personally, I think that any owner that can afford at least market rent for their property should benefit from programs that keep them in the home. That would go a long way towards stabilizing prices and getting back to some normal appreciation. For the rest, I'm sorry, but it wasn't like you were going to share the profits from your decision to buy.

Fire in Summerland

2012-04-27 08:13 AM

My Dad was a firefighter and he taught us not to be lookie-loos (however you spell it) because it impaired their ability to help people or get to their home to put out fires. Summerland is narrow and steep hills, it is not easy to navigate all areas for a big fire truck. The Fire Dept does the best that they can, no bashing on their response time, I doubt it was the fault of the fire fighters!

Turnpike CVS Incident

2012-04-27 07:19 AM

That CVS was a Save-On going back at least to the 1970's when they used to have a full garden department and a small lumber and building supplies department (strange but true) along side the pharmacy counter.

As for what went wrong in the neighborhood, some of it has to do with the proximity to the high (in both senses of the word) school, some has to do with the increasing density of the folks in the apartments north of San Simeon, and some just seems to be coincidence. We may be going downhill here in Noleta, but we have a long way to go to catch up with most big urban areas.

Teslas at Stearns Wharf

2012-04-27 01:55 AM

I had a tesla a few years back- for 3 weeks. Then it broke down. Got my money back for the lemon. I now have a Nissan Leaf. It has zero issues and is my favorite car. I've written about it on ed previously.

Tesla cost $100+. Yes, they got gov't funds. However, without tesla, I doubt there would've been a move to lithium based car batteries. So, they were a proof of concept that lead to the Volt, Leaf, Ford's new all electric, BMW's upcoming electric and so on.

They lost first mover advantage because they didn't know squat about production. I sincerely hope that their first run goes off without a single recall, or they are done.

Meanwhile, the Leaf and it's batteries are all to be made in the USA this year! That is a phenomenal use of fed funds, because it will stimulate jobs, training, infrastructure and domestic sales from an amazing company.

And look at the price point- you can get a Leaf for $28k after incentives. Or you can LEASE one and pay $400/mo, which is probably what most gas users pay for gas each month! It's a no brainer for such a fun and functional car.

Some truly repugnant tagging with infantile "anarchy" tags (probably by white teens trying to act tough) completely coated a house-like city structure across the street from Hendry's beach last week. I was just hoping to see them in the act just once. And they've sprayed all the street signs in the area. Oh boy, I'd love to make a "citizen's arrest."

I was glad to see the building painted right over it promptly and hope the losers won't be back.
