Log Cabin

2012-05-24 09:53 PM

I THINK (operative word, so don't quote me on this) that the house was built in the '20s or '30s for local aviation pioneer Earl Ovington, who was the founder or something of the SB Airport. His daughter, Audrey Ovington, was the owner of the Cold Spring Tavern for decades. Some time in the late '60s or early '70s, Audrey ran a little thrift shop at the De la Vina log cabin and called it "Chateau Debris." Again, I THINK that's the story. Maybe Neal Graffy knows for sure.

Can you take it, Neal?

Somebody said something about somebody's mother and a rumble ensued. Desk sgt told them to take it outside so they met at the SoCoastDeli for the show down. According to the deli staff it's a bit of a regular thing but it caused those customers who happened to be baked at the time or were carrying contraband to dump a load in their pants.

$1.7 Billion for Transportation Pro...

2012-05-24 07:52 PM

SY-The thing individuals like you don't understand is that you may see the bridge they built, or the highway they built, but what you can't quantify and "see" is the labor resources and employment that was strangled by the construction of those projects, and the tax dollars that were inefficiently used. The same thing goes for the minium wage. You may think it's great that people are guaranteed a minimum pay, but if there are people out there(like teenagers whose unemployment rate is sky high) who are willing to work for less, you have just killed their employment opportunity. Price floors and ceilings create shortages and surpluses, thus destroying the market's ability to balance out. Try reading some economic theory OTHER than Keynes.

Neglected Dog Saved

2012-05-24 07:28 PM

Recently, here in Baja, I was visiting a friend who has taken in many rescued dogs. I saw one that was totally beautiful and healthy and asked about her. She said that was "Suzie Q" who had been found in terrible condition by another village resident--12 years ago. The dog had no hair, nor meat on its bones and full of the mange. I remembered those two gals washing and medicating that poor dog.

That resident just happened to be from Carpinteria., but she could not keep this dog and the other lady took her. She died shortly later. Wonderful to see that SUzie Q has had a long and fruitful life.

I know that Ellie will be beautiful when healthy again.

I notice that much of the litter on the 101 in the South Coast areas has been picked up. I think there are a few new Adopt a Highway sponsors. I'd like to thank John Villar who must have adopted two areas on the northbound side that were always trashed. Now we need a group to do Mission St. exit north to Goleta. Caltrans has private companies that a business can hire if they can't clean up the litter themselves. Unfortunately, I don't see a co. in SB County. Might be a good business for an enterprising group.

As far as people getting ticks, I hike the higher trails into the front country all the time--I've almost never seen a tick. Stay on the trail and you won't get them--unless it is an overgrown trail. Then, wear tighter fitting clothes and you'll see them if they get on you and just brush them off.

Very well said, 276 and 331.

Veterans, you are very much appreciated. I am sorry for what you have to go through to recover from the PTSD. And for what you went through that gave you the PTSD. :(

I've had only the slightest taste of PTSD from a very stressful 2 year situation in my life that recently mostly resolved itself. It pretty much wiped me out, leaving me exhausted and without any reserves to deal with new stress. But what I went through is nothing in comparison to what veterans go through. :P

I can't begin to understand what you brave men and women go through when you come back home and try to get back to a "normal life", whatever the heck that really is. My situation partially resolved itself 6 months ago and I'm still not sure I'm back to normal yet.

SB City Council approved a draft or...

2012-05-24 04:37 PM

For those who believe tap water is "potable", and who would ban bottled water:

In SB, there is less excuse for this kind of ignorance than elsewhere. Bragg Live Foods is based here. Paul C. Bragg, (1895-1976). He was a strong advocate for drinking only PURE water. That meant, H2O only, NO chlorine, NO fluoride, NO other adulterants, NO inorganic minerals (which all municipal water is chock full of). He was body surfing in Hawaii, the day he died, aged 81 - living proof of his theories.

For the 99% there are only two ways to drink pure water: Either distill it yourself, or buy bottled distilled water. Charcoal filtration is a joke. If you read up on chlorine and fluoride, you'll discover they are deadly chemicals, which cause cumulative organic damage, and should be avoided like the plague.

Our Veterans struggle on a daily basis. The amount of soilders suffring from PTSD is on the raise. PTSD is hard to understand and hard for the families to cope with. A soilder can be having a wonderful day and then there is a trigger that sets them off. Panick attack, stress, helicopter noise even a smell can trigger the brain. Many try to self medicate with drugs, marijuana or alcohol. I don't know this one personally but have heard students talk about him. He is struggling and has sought help on many occasions. I hope that since he was not in the appartment that he is safe somewhere. If you kinow a Veteran, just let them know that their job was appreciated. You don't have to agree with war but it's nice to let them know that their lives have value.

322P, did you mean landlords? As a small business owner myself I can't possibly imagine why someone other than a landlord would want high rents. And even with landlords, I don't really buy the argument that empty storefronts = tax breaks thus high rent = empty storefronts = less taxes. Though I'm not a landlord/property manager so I'm not really sure about that, just seems like a flimsy argument.

2012-05-24 04:08 PM

The reason this and the Cliff Dr project get so much attention is because the Mesa association and their merry band of architects have become very politically powerful. They are triping over themselves to make an appearance at the sober house lynch mob meeting, and after 1 meeting are purposing to get the law changed. Anything for the votes Now that is some major brown nosing. Try getting that fast action in your neighborhood. Let's also get riid of anyone doing day care in their home, make sure anyone renting out rooms is claiming the income and disallow vacation rentals while we are at it. The Mesa I grew up in was a diverse and live and let live place it is now is dominated by in your business, angry rich white people. I am ready to turn the rentals and my house into sober living homes and move to the west side.

The type of owner that would let his dog get in this condition is beyond my understanding. So great that these groups could step up and help this animal. I wonder how they choose which one to help when so many are in need?

Someday maybe the spay/neuter ordinances that are being passed will have the desired effect and every dog can have a loving home and we can turn the shelters into public gardens or something.

If an instructor took a Beginner class out yesterday, I'd agree that wasn't prudent. If it was an Advanced class or the Sailing Team sailing and capsizing yesterday, well that was good practice!

Ticks on the Trails

2012-05-24 01:49 PM

I found this very small tick crawling on my dog recently, and did some research to see if it could carry lyme disease. It turns out that the small ones, and the young ones in the nymph stage, can carry lyme and be very hard to spot. It seemed that the big ticks that are easy to see are less likely to carry the disease. Nymphs of the blacklegged or deer tick lyme carrier are the size of a poppy seed, while the adults are the size of a sesame seed.

Have Your Cake and Eat it Too

2012-05-24 11:43 AM

Kind of sad how much red tape keeps from people obtaining an edible meal.

I recall visiting my friend in San Francisco a while back, and him telling me to look inside a trash container outside this bagel shop downstairs from where he lived. The container was the size of the large residental ones marborg currently uses in town and was full to the brim with bagels that were still perfectly good, just a day old. They can't sell them as fresh, and I assume they can't donate them, so they go to waste. He said that gets picked up every few days.

If I were homeless and looking for some food, thats the first place I would go.

2012-05-24 11:39 AM

I too live in a neighborhood with 2 halfway houses and a bunch of Pini slum rentals converted into 'sober-living' facilities. The people staying in them have ranged from average to scary. Some do drugs around the corner, or drink in public, sharing a container, and then slide back to the home. Residents are remanded there by Probation, instead of serving a drug or alcohol sentence in the jail. Complain to Probation that the halfway house is a riot zone, and it takes them years to remove it from their list of places to remand offenders to. It's totally unregulated, and the managers seldom have any credentials. I totally understand someone who doesn't want it next to their family.

You wouldn't sign up for a cooking class with the expectation of not getting burned, so I doubt these students expected not to get wet or thrown overboard.

2000 criminal verdicts have been proven erroneous (and many many more are as well), and it's your sort of thinking that led to those convictions. Just because one person was guilty of a crime, that isn't reason to believe some other person was guilty of a crime. Occupy Santa Barbara's quest for an...

2012-05-24 10:38 AM

Occupy was a setup from the get go. The strategy of "occupying public places" was chosen to attract society's "fringe" elements, from the homeless to "discontented youth", those marginalized on account of their failure to conform to the notion of "real Americans", thus giving the mainstream, led by the corporate media, an easy target to demonize.

The dirty *appearance* of Occupiers has been the media's focus - on account of parking themselves in an often wet and muddy field. It was such lousy, self-defeating strategy that Karl Rove would have been proud. No matter how erudite, an unkempt occupier comes across like a loser on television.

Meanwhile, the sociopathic, expensive-suited criminals in the financial sector continue to rape, pillage and loot the economy with impunity, embraced by the mainstream. We go ballistic at discontents using their First Amendment Rights, while going soft on organized crime, and appease the evildoers.

204 hit the nail on the head. Unless MTD (with the help of the City and County) increase the frequency of busses along the routes fewer and fewer will find it possible to use the bus for their daily requirements.

The City constantly hammers us to get out of our cars. But without a real alternative in place it will never be possible. We hear about how cities in Europe and elsewhere are more pedestrian friendly. But the ones that I have seen all have bus and tram service that covers the entire city on a very frequent basis.

And for 077, it isn't the City making the cuts. MTD is their own special district.

Mesa residents block the sober livi...

2012-05-24 09:50 AM

I attended the Mesa meeting.

One person kept insisting they would be felons, another that there would be 16 people there. Others objected that the residents would be charged $800 or $900 per month. One even complained that the residents would probably drink coffee and smoke cigarettes. Another talked about how drunk people would visit them and run over Mesa residents.

It was a truly bizarre and sad experience.

The person living next door has a right to be concerned that it will impact his property value. But it is legal. And it will probably have less drinking than most other homes on the block. Residents are tested regularly and will be booted out if they fail tests. better than the people who live legally next to me!

And here's one more thing to think about- who among us does not know of a family member, friend, co-worker, or neighbor who has a substance abuse problem? Folks, they need help.

282012, that's incorrect. The retail industry replaced paper with plastic not because of the trees, but because plastic is less expensive. That's the only reason (cost savings as one of the driving forces in profitability.)

btw, from the University of Toronto: "Plastic will never break down; It will never disappear. Biodegradeable plastic is a misnomer because wood fiber has been mixed with the plastic so when buried, the wood dissolves leaving a million tiny pieces of plastic, instead of one bag."

I don't believe that communities are claiming that plastic is necessarily 'more evil' than paper, but more with an agenda to get people to consider using reusable bags when shopping. If one carried a cloth reusable bag or a briefcase, backpack, etc.., when shopping then that would help reduce waste. I hate it when I buy something and the clerk automatically puts it into a bag. I can easily carry it or put it into my own bag, etc..

Have Your Cake and Eat it Too

2012-05-24 09:38 AM

Sorry, I should have been more clear. If the food isn't individually wrapped (which by the looks of the local coffee shop food areas, the vast majority isn't), than organizations will not be able to accept it due to food safety laws and concerns. Hence Food Bank, Community Kitchen, etc would not take this type of product. The donating party is also usually VERY wary about donations of "expired" (whether truly expired or not is another issue altogether) products due to liability issues in our litigious society and that's why most give explicit directions to their employees to trash it. Some will allow animal feed donations.
Personally, I think that's ridiculous, and wish we didn't waste so much food in this country when there are so many hungry mouths to feed. That's a problem not just in retail, but the home as well.

The formula for health in old age is lifelong adherence to a healthy plant based diet, vigorous exercise several times a week, low weight (normal), low stress, and familial or other emotional support. This has been in nutritional research findings for years (see The China Study, by Dr. Colin Campbell).

So it is no surprise that those with the "western" lifestyles:
overweight, overstressed, lots of calories from fatty meat, sugar, dairy and alcohol,
resulting poor overall nutrition,
isolated and
overworked
become sick and sicker as they age.

We can change these habits, but it is not easy.

Ying Yang just doesn't get it. It's ALL about the taste of the water! Go ahead and filter SB tap water all you want...it still tastes like and old sneaker soaked in dog pee.

We drink A LOT of water. We buy both the small bottles and the large 2.5g jugs. We recycle every single bottle/jug. Guilt factor = 0.

Don't let eco-terrorists like Ying Yang scare you. PETE is one of the most efficiently recyclable plastics. Add to that the CRV value, which drives vagrants to pick up un-recycled bottles, and there is no problem with bottled water.

Let's see. Do I want to make Cliff Drive safer? And by paying all that money we don't have and giving control and jurisdiction to the City Council and la la City Planning staff we will be safer? What world have you been living in for the last 20 years? I still feel really safe thinking about the blue line that would have shown me where the Ocean will rise up to in a hundred years or so. Everytime I have to drive around a bulbout or one of those inane and useless little roundabout obstructions or dodging chicanes up on Stanley drive I feels so safe! For example the safety theory there was to accomplish a 3 mile an hour documented slow down in the speed of cars on Stanley drive the Chicanes force cars to head at each other as in a head on collision or hit the chicane. Now that is really safe isn't it. Acquire Cliff Drive? I hope not!

It seems like the issue to me is that beginners sometimes don't know enough to know when they are in over their heads to begin with. So have to rely on the experienced instructors to tell them how to proceed safely. If the instructor doesn't show good judgment, then is that a good thing?

I'm pretty sure the class listing doesn't say- Sail in challenging wind conditions with a good chance of capsizing or being unable to make it back to your berth due to adverse wind conditions.

I'm sure the University won't be happy about this kind of liability.

The change is to prevent double dipping by retired people, and they can only work a limited number of hours in a temporary capacity and still get their full retirement pay from CALPERS.

www.csda.net/legislative /1-legislative-highlight/1580-calpers-explains-changes-to-retired-annuitant-law

Luckily for the Chief, they will probably pass a law allowing him to double dip again without penalty. For me, I think he should choose whether he wants to retire and go fishing or keep working, and not benefit from both just because the state laws waste money.

There is a reasonable middle, that acknowledges that those in the fringe groups of TeaParty and Occupy are making a valid point. What used to be a more fair and functional political, social, and economic system is broken. As money corrupts our political process, and both parties become more extreme, the working middle class is becoming the newly poor, while those who bought politicians are reaping disproportionate rewards because the game has been rigged.

The best way to protest is not on the street, but with your votes. http://rootstrikers.org (which used to be FixCongressFirst) sole purpose is to fight the corrupting influence of money in politics (whether that money is corporations or unions or lobbyists for someone else, it's still corrupting.)

Is the food individually wrapped?! I have never been in a Starbucks. LOL
I am sure they are worried about liability, regardless. But if each item is wrapped, there's a good chance they could have an agency or organization pick it up. As 114 mentioned, it's Community Kitchen at the shelter. They have a formal agreement with TJ's; I see their van often at DLV TJ's.

It's a horrible waste of food and it happens all over, every day, in homes and businesses. (But this thread has me craving some kind of pastry. blush)

(Not sure if Edhat allows cited quotes; I haven't done this here before):

"According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Loss Project, we throw away more than 25 percent—some 25.9 million tons—of all the food we produce for domestic sale and consumption. A 2004 University of Arizona study pegs the figure at closer to 50 percent, finding that Americans squander some $43 billion annually on wasted food."
http://www.scientificamerican.com/
article.cfm?id=earth-talk-waste-land

There are more horrifying stats in the article about landfills, methane, water and gas usage to produce unused food, etc. Lots more terrible news & stats can be found by googling, of course.

Nothing to do with fire, and definitely not a pyrocumulus cloud, which looks very much like a big cumulus, billows and pillows, etc. It's a lenticular cloud, and they often form over mountains and hang around for long times. Waves in the atmosphere cause them--I don't actually understand how it works, but the mechanism is well understood by weather and cloud people. Google it. 2012-05-24 08:02 AM

Google Occupy and unions and even wikipedia will set you straight. It only took 10 days for the unions to coattail this movement started by a small group in Canada called AdBusters. So yes, confirming the "conspiracy" between unions and Occupy is pretty much out there for anyone who wants to do even the smallest amount of internet search.

The 1% "rich" is mythical in that it is an ever changing identity that rises and falls amongst itself so you can't target any one person or institution.

Consequently, it was used as a mythical smokescreen by public employee unions who were getting exposed right and left for their $100,000 plus salaries, benefits and gold-plated retirements.

The Bell Curve will always include a few percentage points on each end of the scale. Targeting this alleged mythical "rich" 1% is an exercise in perverse silliness.

If SB is really a town that holds cuture dear, one doesn't cut off the ONLY public transport to these fab places.

To get ridership up, maybe make the #22 visually a special Mission/Museum bus so people could just hop on and go! The city does such a great job w/ Fiesta hats and such on the busses, maybe we could do the same for #22 but even more.

Ticks on the Trails

2012-05-24 07:01 AM

I am surprised no one mentioned the "Tick Twister." It is a very, very inexpensive piece of plastic that slides around the body of the tick. Then you slowly twist it and ALL of the tick comes right out. They sell these at the vets and at the pet stores. I have used the tweezer method and the tick always broke off for me, leaving the dreaded head still in the skin. However, the "Tick Twister" has been 100% effective-and EASY! My vet told me that that is what they use when someone brings their dog in that has a tick.

I noticed that you can also buy it online. A friend of mine visiting from Massachusetts, who lost one dog to Lyme Disease, ordered the "Tick Twister" online when he was visiting and saw me use it on my dog. And it is very cheap-just a few dollars for one and a bit more for a two pack.

Composite Eclipse

2012-05-24 12:09 AM

I'm Andy. Thanks for all the kind words! In answer to the "how was it done" questions: The reason compositing is necessary for an image like this, aside from the time sequence, is that the huge difference in brightness of the subjects exceeds the dynamic range (range of bright-to-dark that can be captured in a single exposure) of the camera's sensor (what used to be film), which actually has worse dynamic range than our eyeballs. For example, in the images taken with the solar filter in place, only the sun is visible, and everything else is so underexposed as to appear black. That's why I had to remove the filter at the end to take pictures of the mission. And I actually had to take two unfiltered mission pictures because when the mission was exposed correctly, the still-bright sky was overexposed (mostly white), and when the sky was exposed correctly, the mission was too dark. I layered all the images on top of each other in Photoshop and then I made transparent the poorly-exposed parts of each image, i.e., the black background in the filtered sun images, the overexposed sky in one mission image, and the underexposed mission in another. Because I hadn't moved the camera or changed the zoom, everything appeared in the right places without having to drag stuff around. With a theoretically ideal camera (and display device and eyeballs) with infinite dynamic range, I could have gotten this picture with a single shot and everything would be visible at once (although the sequence of sun positions would still require multiple exposures). Hopefully any experts out there will correct me if my theoretical understanding is wrong here! I'm really a beginner at photography.
