Is it possible to send a check instead of sending credit card info? If so, can I, and the other people who may be interested in paying by check rather than by credit card, get pertinent info as to who to make the check out to and where to mail it? Thank you for all that you do!!!!!

Do you take cash in a plain white envelope? No questions asked.

Yes, we take cash. And, the color of the envelope does not matter.

How about Paypal? That seems the easiest way to pay securely online.

How about my recycling? Can I bring in some bottles and cans? Recycling for Edhat payment?

This woe is me poverty card is really unbecoming. If Edhat really served the community and delivered results, I am sure advertising wouldn't be a problem - look at the success of other local sites. And I am sure I am speaking for others, but Edhat has become a random assortment of junk, almost like a swap meet of news. The traffic could be up, but its just not the same. And the constant begging isn't good, although very fitting for SB.

90955, I think if you look at the ratio of paid to unpaid commenters, it's obviously a small minority who have paid to subscribe.

I personally have been very happy to contribute to a website that does give us such relevant (and immediate) information about a lot of important things that go on in our city and surrounding areas. I don't claim to be speaking for anyone else besides myself. Perhaps you shouldn't either.

Is that not what advertising is all about - begging for money? Glad Edhat does not do all the glitz, but is just straight forward and honest about it.

Hey, edhat saved my family during the last two summers of fire.

And I have 16 weeks left on my subscription. Worth every cent.

I completely disagree with 90968. Why not offer benefits to people who pay for them? Should the site just go quietly into the night if they cannot continue to pay their bills? I think they are completely justified in their actions and appreciate what they provide to me for free.

Here is my take on the advertising situation at edhat.

1. Amateurish web 1.0 site design is not "professional" enough for most advertisers, especially larger corporations with decent advertising budgets. Even the News Press looks like a more modern website, while edhat maintains its geocities "charm".

2. Begging is actually not very becoming. I can see a business not wanting to be associated with a site that is constantly haranguing and berating their fellow businesses and community members to the point of shrillness.

What do you mean by Community membership? I am fully paid as an individual. I really enjoy Edhat and it has a variety of things to keep me interested. I especially like Roger and to be informed of upcoming events. Thanks!

3. Arbitrary editorial policy and constantly shifting rules do not make for a stable platform. Just in attempting to post this I came upon multiple new restrictions (1000 characters or less, only one post per hour). Businesses want consistency and reliability and edhat seems to be missing a vital business plan for profitability, leading to the "grasping at straws" appearance.

4. Intermingling of real news with "what's up" and flower photos makes it hard for advertisers to find their niche. Perhaps the site should be broken up into 4-5 categories, so serious advertisers can post on the news aggregation site, while local framing services can post on the sunset photo site.

I think the restrictions on non-paying members is fair. I think the format of edhat is great and easy to navigate.

The ethic of the internet does appear to be a place were you can get something for nothing. Broadening the appeal of edhat to more affluent posters could help its advertising appeal a lot. But there is a strong posting bias against this group here.

There also is a lot of complaining here about what they call the high cost of living. So overall this combination has little appeal for advertisers. Fostering subscriptions and an easy access Paypal button would work best.

As far as I can tell, the added value attained as a subscriber is being able to post multiple times per hour in a thread, being able to post after hours, being able to embed links/pictures in comments, a colorized banner and the option to display your handle, and a discount on Edhat T-shirts. Am I missing anything?

I think there needs to be more added value for the subscriber, or alternatively, less value for the non-subscriber.

A major thing that you left out is the great free tickets and giveaways that are offered regularly to subscribers. So far we have given back over $10,000 ticket face value donations to our members.

"We charge 1/4 of what others charge for advertising"

So charge more and stop harassing your readers. With your restrictions and your nannyism I don't feel respected and thus do not wish to contribute to you.

I , of course, am happy that I can subscribe to numerous news online throughout the country and world for free---except the Santa Barbara News Press. So I have been delighted with edhat which gives more than just news, but readers opinions and comments, and lots of fun or beautiful things. It covers things that the local Wendy rag would not touch. So I will choose a color as soon as my check gets in for me. As I am a night owl, I will be able to respond at night too. Yeah!!

I find it near to unbelievable that people wank and complain this much about subscribing to Edhat. I am a single parent, I work full time, I am considered to be low-income. I do not consider Edhat to be perfect and I wish that the subscriber level was high enough that there did not have to be comments at the end of the comment threads encouraging people to subscribe. That being said, I signed up for a monthly deduction of LESS THAN FIVE DOLLARS A MONTH after my son was in lockdown at San Marcos and there was no other way of keeping up to the minute with what was going on. I was at work, worried and not getting enough information from either the radio or television. Thanks to Edhat, I was able to find out exactly when to pick up my child and was able to avoid ensuing gridlock. Thanks also to Edhat, did not end up stuck in traffic for hours one morning when some kook shut down the La Cumbre overpass AND I have had the best coverage of ANY fire in our recent past. All that for the cost of, let's see...a venti soy latte from Starbucks, 5% of your cable bill, a magazine, a third of the cost of a new paperback, a loaf of bread, 1/6 of a monthly internet bill, a gallon and a half of gas, half the cost of a lunch out, a bag of cookies... @91213: LOL!

One of the things I like about Edhat is its simple, pared down design....no advertising banners flashing at me or videos running along the side. I do patronize the advertisers and feel that by choosing to advertise on Edhat they are part of the local community.

As for the subscription...again, we need to support local businesses in our community, especially one that provides more up to date information than any of our TV stations or newspapers.

And as if that isn't enough reason to subscribe, take a look at the local history tab or read the Urban Hikers series. It's great to have something positive to balance out some of the other news.
