Great tips & pictures about an easily accessible wonder right here in our backyard.

The second image is proof positive drivers needs to keep their eyes glued to the road while navigating Fig's narrow & scenic motor paths.

As far as purchasing the always controversial Adventure Pass, I submit the following EdHat post before parting with your cash. link

Thank you for this! It's been years since I camped at Davy Brown and I keep forgetting about it. When is the hunting season (or seasons) you warn against - and is there drinking water at Davy Brown?

We often back-packed in and camped out beyond Davy Brown in the 60s, took out our own trash and any little bits (quite rare) we found. Big kitties came through camp at night, probably following deer. Mornings there would be big, deep prints of each kind of animal in the damp sand at river's edge. Only problem we ever had was some guy firing a rifle at my husband and missing. His apology? "Oh, I thought you was a squirrel."

Very comprehensive report! Big cats and bears at Davy Brown, Nira and beyond, yes. Drinking water, no.

1. If you are over 62, do NOT buy an Adventure Pass. Spend $10 for a lifetime pass instead: http://www.nps.gov/findapark/passes.htm

2. If you have two couples hiking, and drive two cars, one can park at the bottom of the Davy Brown trail, and then you can all drive up to the top of the trail in the other car, and do the hike all downhill, returning to the other car when you're done.

3. We're life-long hunters. We stopped camping at Figueroa for opening day when we discovered a cultural difference. We would go to sleep early, to get up very early, to hike to the right spot before sunrise on opening day. About 10 years ago (the last deer hunting we did in California), we discovered that many of Mexican heritage stay up late drinking, playing music loudly, talking loudly and partying all night before opening day. 100% opposite of our traditions (quiet by 9 PM), and incompatible, so we quit going.

4. No responsible hunter would ever shoot near another human nor say, "I thought you were a ground squirrel." Please don't judge all hunters by the actions of one irresponsible person with a gun.

5. Figueroa Mtn is in zone A South. Deer season for rifles this year for that zone is 13 August to 25 September. I looked it up with Google.

I love Figueroa most any time of year. It's a wonderful destination for hiking, camping, wildflower viewing, wildlife viewing, occasional glissading, etc. But it's not the same idyllic place it was, because there are thieves who steal from camp sites and parked cars now. Please be cautious while having fun.

189P Very useful.
I'm sure you need a permit, still, to go in and to have any kind of fire.
One time we hiked out and found a drenched campsite near the trailhead, with unhappy campers trying to pack up - - Forest Service had "sprinkled" their un-permitted fire to put it out, and washed everything pretty much down to the river. I gathered they may have been repeat offenders or previously warned.
I can't of course vouch for the trail, but "glissade sans neige" was a sure thing across one section all those years ago. Squirrely husband was known as "Chicken of the Scree."
I don't want to impugn hunters in general - - my guy did his share - - but one should know there is a danger.

We stopped camping at Figueroa -- after many years of enjoying the quiet and the beauty -- after one horrible night there just before Memorial Day. College kids came up, claimed a site near an open firepit, and built a huge, dangerous bonfire. Their nighttime orgy filled the air, inspired no doubt by wine and beer and God knows what other substances. No ranger came near. (Some of the idiots left the party at 2 AM, rambled noisily through the campground, got in their car and drove down to the valley. Incredibly, we saw no bodies scattered along the roadside as we drove out in early morning.) Never again.

Where's that old, rusty car? Never seen it on my treks out there, but I'd love to go take a look.

As I recall, the dirt one lane road nearing Happy Canyon access point from the "circle line tour" via Fig Mtn Rd. is quite suspenseful when two cars, going in opposite directions, attempt to pass each other. One side of the road has a drop off, the other a slight hill. What to do if one is a Jeep? Pass each other with the Jeep on the incline side, proceeding at a 60 degree angle to the road. Actually happened to me. I was not the Jeep. I was scared to death that my vehicle would end up looking like the rusted out one in the photo you shared... My bones basking in the sunlight of the beautiful back country scene. Never again, I said to myself! Do people in their right minds and without 4-wheel drive actually do this on a regular basis? This was nearly 5 years ago. Has the road improved, since you have suggested to all these unwitting folk that they give it a try? Or am I just a big coward? More likely the latter. LOL.

On the last camping trip to Davy Brown with my best friend and her parents, just before school started, we were on the trail - just the two of us..it was extremely hot - we took off our shirts and were enjoying the walk when 2 men came toward us. Quicky, we put our shirts back on. They laughed and said don't worry - we're married. Imagine my embarrassment when, as I sat in my senior year business class, SBHS, in walked the teacher - He smiled and said 'hi again'... My "trail buddy", Mr. Hall.

400 Wonderful story!!
329 One time we spent who knows how long going up that dirt road behind an extremely slow and rude driver who wouldn't let anyone go around. The commercial name of the camper on this rig? You got it. "King of the Road."

What's with using a rusted car to promote beautiful breathtaking scenery?? To use it as the main picture for this attraction is an oxymoron. Why not use one of the other beautiful pictures and leave the rusted car as a warning of what could happen if you don't pay attention to the roads.
