Just a quick addition to the description posted by the person who's had Dals...........they do have a tendency to be one-person dogs; they are very athletic and need a lot of exercise and a firm, confident owner. There are some genetic defects, including deafness, so if someone is considering the breed, they should know this. This is not the breed for a family on the go with little time for the dog.

Beautiful boy! 814P took the warning right out of my mouth. But -- if you have the time to give them the work that they need, they are great dogs.

I was surrounded by 6 of them on a back street while riding my bike when i was younger. They were growling and showing teeth and if it weren't for the Rottweiler that i fed thru my gate everyday which lived with the dals and stood beside me so i could get away, I'd probably would have been screwed!! Good pics though:)

I knew a couple who worked at home (nursery growers) and Lily, their Dal, was queen of the roost, had plenty to do all day, so she was a happy, contented dog. I do remember reading that after the "101 Dalmations" movies, lots of Dalmations were taken on as family pets and then the shelters became inundated when people gave them up. Glad yours is in a happy, structured life.

i was given a dalmatian as a gift once. the dog was deaf! how funny it was how that dog would use her nose to sniff so hard under the back door to see what was going on in the house. and when that thing would get loose....wow, what an experience. the dog hair from that animal lingered for years after the dog was gone.

Poster, you are lucky; that's one of the most beautiful Dalmations I've ever seen. I grew up with them, a relative raised them. They really need excercise!! As fire dogs, they ran along ahead of the horses, barking to alert "get out of the way".

Dalmatians were used by the old fire-departments because they helped keep the horses calm.......

Not sure how to say this without being gross, but they do tend to keep their tails up, and there's not much short hair back there, so if you don't mind looking at a lot of pink....

Yes, lots of exercise is a must for these spotted dogs.

019, I'm wondering when/where they were supposed to keep the horses calm? Maybe at the stable? Certainly not racing full-tilt to a fire. Really, I'm always interested in "the rest of the story".

This high-energy breed is only for those who understand it isn't for people who want to exclude it from their lives. The Dal needs basic training, lots of exercise, and inclusion. The Dal's compatibility with horses is legion. This coaching dog was trained to run in front of carriages to help clear a path and guide the horses. They are fierce watch dogs and the Anheuser-Busch site says they were used historically by brewers to guard the wagon while the driver was making deliveries. You'll never visit those Clydesdales or see them in a parade without being accompanied by a Dalmatian.
