A group of kayakers with SB Adventure Co. were out just past the harbor breakwater last Sunday and they saw a whale.

Coal Oil Point north of UCSB is where they do the whale counts. Wilcox property might be good too with it's high vantage point.

The Gray Whale count takes place at Coal Oil Point, but it's on UCSB property and you need a special pass to get through the gate. You can park in Isla Vista and take the path to the point. Any high point on the coast is good too; take binoculars if you have them and keep your eyes peeled - and be patient. They're passing very close to the shore these days.

We are spotting whales every day now, sometimes 4 to 6 at a time, but it is rare and very exciting when they "stand" up and look around. Thanks for the pic.
