Get a glass jar, dump in enough seed to cover the bottom, add enough water to cover the seeds, soak for a day, empty water, rinse with fresh water twice a day(reuse the water for potted plants or) same results, less cleanup. Potting soil ain't cheap and lord knows what's in the commercial kinds.

I use the clamshells for starting seedlings that get planted out into the garden. Great for humidity needed for young plants. Careful that it's not biodegradable plastic, or you'll have yuck on the bottom after a while.

Growing edibles is a great project. I wonder, though, with all I've read about plastics leaching chemicals into foods, whether the container is as good as the impulse to reuse/recycle certainly was. Maybe glass?

you can find "microgreens" seed mixtures in one packet, or just mix a few packets of your favorite veggies. I like to throw in some cilantro and dill for fun. It's been mild lately so the seeds didn't have a chance to dry out. I had poked holes in the bottom and set the box in a tray of shallow water, to soak up from the bottom. Always bottom-water your seddlings, it won't wash the soil and seeds around. This is a good project to introduce novices or kids to gardening.

@694: Not just Roger - yum! I like these easy, container-grown vegetable projects. Thanks, OP, for sharing this.
