LOL. Did the horse wake up after it fell? We had two Shetland ponies on the farm I grew up on.

They are so cute.... .......
Now, the other side... There are hundreds of horses that go to slaughter every year, so why would anyone still be breeding????

Yes, it is sad that so many horses go to slaughter every year. I have horses so it does make me sad to read, hear and see the horses that end up at the auction yards. It is so cruel. But let me tell you, these little guys were so happy, gentle and peaceful that I left with a light heart and feeling upbeat about everything. If you are depressed and feeling low, go see these litttle darlings (or go to a dog park) and get a shot of happiness and well-being with our furry friends. They just make me smile!

I think there is a glut of horses and with the economy people can't afford to care for them. These miniature horses only grow to the size of a big dog. They are inexpensive to feed and don't need shoes like riding horses (very expensive). My guess is they don't end up at the slaughter houses. Some minis have been trained as "seeing eye horses"; they can live to be about 40 so last much longer than dogs.

Adult horses sleep standing up ... and if they are down, then they, and you, may have a problem, medically speaking.

Good point, 138. I always checked if I saw one of our horses down, their bodies aren't built to deal w/it, organs squished, etc. Also, as you said, often a sign of illness, especially colic (biggest killer of horses). So, a curious fact, to me, is that the famous race horse Seabiscuit nearly always stretched out in his stall, napping for hours. Always wondered about that!
