Just curious, but are there any non-stops from Santa Barbara to Hawaii? It seems to me Santa Barbara would be a more desirable location to fly out of and into vs. Santa Maria.

No there are not any non-stop or direct flights to Hawaii from SBA. You can connect of course from the various major airports such as LAX or SFO.

Wha type of plane are they using for such a long flight?

The "logic" here is that SMX is the closest mainland airport to the Sandwich Islands. On the East Coast, Presque Isle Maine is closest to Europe. That is why so many people fly to London and Paris from there.

They are using a 757. I don't believe the SB runway is long enough for such a plane fully loaded with fuel and people.

Ummm, if Airforce 2 can land here, I think the runway is long enough.

@687 AF1 wasn't topped off with fuel nor did it have 350 passengers on board.

Wasn't there a news item last year about SMX (Santa Maria) offering "inducements" to attract airlines? Maybe that's also a factor for Allegiant, along with the fact it can serve both SB & SLO counties.

I assume it's cheaper to operate out of SMX. And, last time I checked, parking is free at SMX so it's attractive to consumers.

Wikipedia says this... Runway paved to 8,000 feet, giving it the longest commercial runway between Los Angeles and San Francisco on the coast of California.

SBA's main runway (7/25) is only 6,052 ft. A fully loaded 757 to take a trip to Hawaii would weigh around 200k lbs and would need a minimum of 6,000 ft to take off.

Excellent to be able to fly to Hawaii from the central coast but just out of curiosity, If one took off from Santa Maria and headed for Hawaii where would you stop? I should hope it is "non-stop" in "the unlikely event of a water landing" somewhere along the way.

SMX lengthened their runway to 8000 feet more than enough for the 757. Also they have already 4 days a week service to Las Vegas with Allegiant. Santa Barbara did have service with Allegiant a couple years back but the local traveling community did not support it and they pulled out.
