This is the hydrant on East Figueroa Street in front of La Arcada. As one of many improvements to his charming property, Mr. Peterson (sadly now passed away) spent his own hard earned money to upgrade the hydrant above what the City usually installs to beautify the property and improve the experience of his tenants and their customers. Many locals take their visiting friends to the property to shop or have a meal to show off one of the nicest properties in all of Santa Barbara. What an amazing legacy.

Usually the local Fire Department paints them all yellow so as to make it easier to find in an emergency. I painted the one in front of my home red, and found this out by painful experience(they charged me to re-paint it yellow)

@126 and anyone curious: red is for private fire hydrants, yellow is city-owned - for the most part. The colors can also signify the water pressure in some places.

Thanks ElRojo, La Arcada should/could be the template for anyone aspiring to be a great retail landlord. I worked at Josie's El Cielito in the 70's and remember fondly how pleasant it was to walk to work in such a beautiful place and how Mr Peterson's care and attention to detail made everyone's day a little better.

YES! Hugh Peterson's legacy will remain bright and shining for many years to come. Hugh exemplified the highest concept of a retail landlord. Fire hydrants, bronze statues, the most elegant marble stairway are but a few of the examples of his aesthetic foresight. Shoreline Park continues to benefit from his gift of a telescope next to the Bud Bottom's "WHALE'S TAIL BENCH"
