I'm so sorry for your loss, and commend you for taking such good care of him for so many years, that's quite a commitment.

A friend once told me, after the loss of a beloved dog, that if grief is the price we pay for *all* of the joy they bring us, we would surely do it again.

Remember the joy.

Thanks for sharing the neat pictures and amazing story about Buddy's great life with Bob & you.

It must be really tough for you two right now, but each day will get a bit better.

Pets are so much fun to have as a member of the family because they are the best listeners, provide hours of entertainment for us humans, and enjoy the love & attention we give them.

Keep us posted on how it goes and if another kitty happens into your lives.

Hi Dan - Great report about Momma skunk & babies. She knows of you loss. That's very cool she didn't go off too.

Hmmm...Buddy was black and white, the skunks are black and white...maybe Buddy has been reincarnated as a baby skunk? Either that, or he's sending you a message to not be lonely without him, he's there in one form or another.

Hi, Dan,

Last Dec. 1, Delilah, my 13-year-old Alaskan Malamute, crossed the Rainbow Bridge. I know exactly how you feel. While I was coming to grips with Delilah's passing, I came across something by Dr, Seuss (of all people), which made me feel a little better. I can't remember the exact words, but the message was:

Don't be sad that it's over.
Be glad that it happened.

It sounds like Buddy (and of course Bob) had a very, VERY good home and life.

Cats make wonderful companions. They don't expect much, a bowl of food and a quiet place to sleep, and they give so much in return especially if you take the time to get to know them. Losing such a companion of 16 years is rough and I can empathize with you and Bob's loss. Keep those photos handy.

I know how very much it hurts. My husband and I have been through it several times. Let yourself cry and know that he's around you, even though you can't see him. And he'll be waiting for you someday at that rainbow bridge. Hope all the loving comments people have written bring you some measure of comfort. Love the thought that the skunks came to give you their version of hugs.

Thanks for all the comments. Really, every one was nice. I don't want to say the skunk encounter was anything other than a random meeting. But this morning I had another.

I was working on San Gabriel street when I felt something behind me. I turned and it was a black Aussie Shepard with white markings. She was all over me, putting her face in my hands and pretty much siting on my feet. I thought "Whatever, I'm going with it." I've seen this dog once or twice in the many years I worked at this house. I got my camera and snapped a few photos.

A few minutes later I saw a neighbor and I yelled, "Is this your dog?" She yes, her name is Sushi.

So Sushi, thanks for the wet nose snuggles.

Dan
