Operating as originally intended? Without bells? Great news?

It was originally intended to have a digital recording of bells rather than analogue? That is some foresight!

The way it was "originally intended" to ring on time with the clock itself? As in, how ANY clock/bell tower should work? Whoopie...?

I'm confused as to what the original intention was. I highly doubt it included fake bells and a recording.

The sad part of this is that we're probably the only country that would settle for this "Disneyland style" approach to the making of bell sounds. To say that it has been improved is false. Tying the recording to the clock movement means absolutely nothing.

If you've been outside of the U.S., you know that bell towers (at least in Europe) always have real iron or bronze bells. There is no comparison in the sharp clang of a real bell when it rings.

I'd suggest before the City Council goes off on another misplaced agenda item as they are known to do, someone needs to school them on just how phoney our bells appear to tourists, not to mention to our local citizens. I've long thought that this is an embarassment to Santa Barbara, and this "news" today makes it even worse. They just don't get it.

Just what we need--more racket downtown!

Real bells are not always nice on the ears. Mt Carmel Church in Montecito has real bells that are painfully dissonant. Completely out of tune, yet they are so proud of their real bells. Living14 years near them was painful, glad I cannot hear them from the mesa. Yes, this is a 1st world problem.

There must be some way out of here," said the joker to the thief,
"There's too much confusion, I can't get no relief.
Businessmen, they drink my wine, plowmen dig my earth,
None of them along the line know what any of it is worth."

"No reason to get excited," the thief, he kindly spoke,
"There are many here among us who feel that life is but a joke.
But you and I, we've been through that, and this is not our fate,
So let us not talk falsely now, the hour is getting late."

All along the clocktower, princes kept the view
While all the women came and went, barefoot servants, too.

Outside in the distance a wildcat did growl,
Two riders were approaching, the wind began to howl

---to paraphrase Jimi Hendrix

Gripe, gripe, gripe! The Mission doesn't ring real bells either and the "recording" sounds beautiful. Looking forward to hearing the courthouse.

If I can believe EdHat http://www.edhat.com/site/tidbit.cfm?
id=227 the Mission Bells are real. They are, however, rung mechanically.

I've lived within a quarter mile of them for more than a quarter of a century and they have never bothered me. To the contrary, they have often been a comfort in their consistency.

Anyone who complains about them obviously didn't do much due diligence before moving to this beautiful part of a beautiful city.

There she stood in the doorway

I heard the mission bell

And I was thinking to myself

This could be heaven or this could be hell

I'm very glad to live in a place where something like this is big news and draws happiness and ire at the same time - this is the only place in the world besides Carmel where everyone wants to be involved in absolutely everything. I'll take it any day over the knife and gun parade that took place daily in my former town - y'all keep going now.
