This Mayor is unbelievable. Wasn't it Mayor Schneider who told us that the city has no money and that we should vote increase the sales tax on ourselves this November? Yet she votes to keep funding the Rental Mediation Task Force? There is no way I am going to vote for the sale tax increase now if the Mayor can't say "no" to touchy, feely special interest programs that benefit just a few people. If the city has enough to spend money on things like the Rental Mediation Task Force, then clearly it certainly doesn't any more of our money.

If you don't see how the RHMTF benefits us all I feel really sorry for you.

How dare they continue the evil city government?! All poor people choose to live that way. If they have no bread, let them eat cakes. The world would be so much better if people who aren't like us would just go far away and die.

Care to "enlighten" us, Captain Haley? It seems to me that rental disputes are best left to the courts. If the renter can't afford an attorney, he or she can represent him or herself. Our city government does not have the funds to be all things to all people. That $64,000 now allocated for the Rental Mediation Task Force could have been used to fund to hire a new police officer or fire fighter. Or that $64,000 could have been used to offset some of the utility rate hikes the Mayor and City Council wants the rest of us to pay for.

Why should the city give a chit about renters? They only comprise 62% of the Santa Barbara city population.

As someone who rents my deceased parent's home, the Rental Housing Mediation Task Force has helped on several occasions - threading peace in the issues that have arisen over the years. Thank you RHMTF for saving tenant and owner money and time that might have gone to expensive attorney billable hours.

402, if 62% of SB is rentals ( and I have no reason to doubt that stat) then why not make the landlords and renters pay for this? The $64k question is not whether the task force is good or not, it's why is it the city's responsibility to fund it? This can be applied to many, many other projects

@287243 You should google "special pleading". Why should the city hire a new police person when it can spend the $64,000 so much more effectively by continuing the RHMTF?

Good job city council. Randy seems to be willing to talk and change his mind! I hope this continues and we can have good debates on issues and move forward.
