I wonder if they will address/include atheism in their material?

Ahteism is not a religion, therefore, I wouldn't expect them to study an absence of belief.

295972 -- remember back in the fall of 2009, when he had his own personal time-out corner here on Edhat?

296009P - Of course they will include atheism. Their stated goal is "...to learn firsthand how people with widely differing beliefs can coexist..."

One can argue whether or not atheism qualifies as a "religion", but all semantics aside, atheism is most certainly a "belief" that is in the category of "religion".

In set theory, a set with no elements is the null set, but it is still a set. I consider atheism a religion for similar reasons.

UCSB has a great religious studies program, one of the first in the country, started back in the day by the brilliant Ninian Smart. It makes a lot of sense that they'd have an event at UCSB. I think this would be really interesting to attend.

This is a wonderful program! For several years, we hosted a dinner for several of the scholars from Africa and Asia. Their stories were fascinating. It made quite an impact on our children.

This is also an important program, since many of the visitors are from areas where there is much strife between different religions. They come to see religious pluralism in action and it makes me proud to be an American that we can coexist peacefully despite religious differences.

I just met all these visiting scholars yesterday and was very impressed by their intelligence and warmth. They're a great, diverse and vibrant bunch—lively and engaging. Wish other people had the same opportunity as I did to meet them.
