Roger, everybody is different, but I have joint pain from an old bone break, and I find cutting out sugar, white carbs of all kinds and fatty foods really helps. I got some Nordic Walking Poles (like ski poles) and they really help my stability, give me better posture when I walk for excercise. Kinda fun too. And I take glucosamine tabs and mega 3's too. Pain still comes and goes, when I go off my 'diet', and then I pay! I also stretch before any vigorous activity. Maybe you could get some phys therapy to give you some exercises to help strengthen your legs and lower back.

You are correct Sir, getting old and hurting all the time SUCKS. But I move it anyway, cause it's worse if I don't.

I wonder what the real story is with the transient hitting the 5 year old in the face. Did that really happen? It would be great to find out from a bystander what the situation was, my teens keep asking to go downtown to do things and I don't like it, especially after reading stuff like that!

It's hard to believe I know but I report what I hear and I heard that twice. I would get together with other parents and speak to them about how they deal with their children going downtown. If I had kids I would not let them go downtown alone. No way no how with what I hear on the scanner and have experienced in Santa Barbara through the years. Especlly with people urinating and dropping turds all over the place it's not sanitary. I could just picture some little kid touching that then putting their hands in their mouth. Thats what little kids do. I would never take a kid down there..With that said many years ago I took my Nephew downtown I'd take him to see movies, Mc Donalds, The State street Arcade, and Lawenforcement Day. That is when things were much better here.

I take my kids downtown all the time but watch them like hawks and really don't know that I want them down there without me even though they are now teenagers, they are YOUNG teens. Argh, I wish that this city was safer but the vagrants really create too much of a dangerous & unknown element downtown, even in broad daylight!

As someone who has lived here about 45 years, I observe the homeless downtown but don't think of downtown State Street as dangerous or the panhandlers as aggressive.

As a 41 year resident that goes downtown on a bi-weekly basis at least, I have observed some of the newer vagrants to be dangerous and agressive. Also, there are some that sit on benches and vomit on the ground between their feet while the rest of the world walks by. To me, I think that anyone that out of it and in such a public place IS a hazard, especially to youngsters. There have always been homeless in this town and I know how to deal with, or avoid, them but it is another thing for me to feel okay with my kids around them.

As a longtime resident that lives downtown, I stopped taking my kid to the State St Farmer's Market 4 years ago. We were accosted by 3 different homeless men in 2 blocks acting very edgy and nervous with the same story: just need money to get back to (insert place here). It scared my kid. Now I buy produce at a local market. I ate at a Thai restaurant downtown with a friend yesterday. We watched a transient run a mother and small boy off the bench in front of the restaurant window. It feels unsafe. Therefore it IS unsafe.

The Mayor stubbed her toe...No just kidding I think it was the Canary Hotel Elevator Rescue which I listed but did not see a need for a breaking news story. Although the people were in the elevator for a time. Just before that there was a gas leak in the 1800 Block of Bath so you might have heard sirens from both calls.

Some transients are very territorial. This is their home now and they will do as they please. Perhaps the homeless-by-choice and parolees feel empowered when they read local opinions that support their anti-social behavior. When blame is attached to a larger evil, they are no longer required to take personal responsibility for their actions nor feel the need to restrain themselves. This is who they are. And guilt-ridden people protect them. This is their town now. Get used to it.

Why would fire trucks go to the Canary? It's 2 doors away... crazy!
