Interesting challenge! Thanks for posting. I hope you were joking about your blindness - I've been caught off guard by the brightness of an object ( a marshmallow in a solar cooker of all things!) and the resulting spot in my vision was very scary! Did you try a polarizing filter? That might help... where's a Brooks graduate when you need them? :-) If you figure out a better way, post again!

Cirrus clouds I think are generated when fast winds at high altitude sweep the tops of thunderstorm "heads" downwind. Meaning that thunderstorms are on the way--sometimes at least. The solar halo is the same effect as a lunar halo--also not that easy to photograph. Thanks for sharing this!
