Hey, does anyone know where in town to buy fresh tortilla chips? Not the mass-produced, over-
salted bagged variety, but real homemade ones?

Go to any Mexican Restaurant and order a couple of batches and your favorite salsa, that is what I do for parties or quick muchie fix. Packaged kind you can find in Santa Maria at El Toro

Most small mexican food places will fry them up and serve them with salsa or guac for a reasonable fee. Just make sure they fry them before they serve them, otherwise there's a good chance they might be from a giant bag of chips hiding under a counter. Los Arroyos has good fresh chips.

That's funny, because at the places that I consider to have the best Mexican food (e.g. El Bajio), they don't do chips. Los Arroyos has very good chips, and their hot Salsa Quemada is probably the best fresh hot salsa in SB. Stay away from Del Pueblo...their chips are way too thick.

Cucas on the Westside and the Mesa has EXCELLENT fresh chips, and salsa-practically a steal. Also good guacamole.

What's a good tortilla chip without good salsa? Cuca's salsa is horrible. Just like El Sitio, Del Pueblo, La Carreta, et al...it all comes out of a huge jug.

New Baja Grill (in Goleta by Costco) has great chips and salsa! All their salsas are made fresh daily, they also have the best guac in town! My mom loves the chips and salsa from El Bohemia in Old Town Goleta. I like the chips, they are slightly sweet but the salsa is on the hotter side.

How about this idea? Make your own. When we want fresh chips, we fry 'em up ourselves. Way better than anything you can buy.

There's a science to making good chips: good tortillas, oil hot and FRESH enough, and seasonings that do not overpower the fresh corn flavor. Usually chips that are heavily salted mean poor quality or stale tortillas. To heck with restaurants posting health dept's gradings at their front window. I say they hsould post the day(s) they change the oil in htier deep fryers. Old old not only makes food taste bad, it's unhealthy.
