Vet in Santa Ynez
updated: Dec 06, 2010, 9:41 AM
Does anyone in the Santa Ynez Valley know of a good inexpensive Vet? We have adopted a stray cat and she seems to have an injury to her paw.

Animal Rescue Team in Solvang uses Sheri MacVeigh, DVM. I don't know what she charges. You might want to call and ask. I googled and found this

We have been taking our dog to Buellton Vet Clinic for a year now. The prices are fairly reasonable.

Please think lost not stray. The cat may indeed be stray but it may also be lost so I hope you make a concerted effort to look for an owner. Talk to all your neighbors and ask the kids in your neighborhood if anyone has lost a cat. File a found cat report at the local shelters and post an ad on Craigslist and in the local paper. The shelters can scan the cat for a microchip as can the vet you choose. It's a mystery as to why this cat is lost. Be a detective and find out why. You'll feel so much better about keeping the cat when you know for sure someone else is not heartbroken.

Buellton Clinic is expensive and they will suck you into expensive tests if you dont resist. Solvang with Dr. McVeigh is very reasonable. The little darling may have a fracture in her foot. Ouch. Oh and maybe check with the County on whether she is lost. But, knowing the economy...people are dumping animals left and right. Sad

She was actually left by a tenant moving out of an apt. in Venice Beach. She lived in an alley under a dumpster for weeks until my son asked if we may want her. He had her checked for chip, if for nothing else to at least find out who the assholes were that left her. We got her and noticed the injury. Thanks for the vet links.

What a lucky cat to find her way to you! Don't forget to get her microchipped.

I didn't know there was such a thing as "inexpensive vet". I hope you find one.

If your kitty - and new best friend - needs routine shots, the SY Humane Society offers discounted rates. Good luck!

I agree with COMMENT 126212P, "inexpensive" and "Veterinarian" should not be allowed in the same sentence. My cat got into some trouble and got torn up in a fight, he went to the Vet... $850 to make him better. Don't have that kind of money right now, what other option? O.K. now, how about $535??? Nope, sorry, what else? Back to the calculator they go... after more "negotiations" we walked out with medication that cost $135 and Mr. Kitty was all better within a week! It's insane that they'd start at the price they did when we asked from the get go to make it easy on us. Thanks Vet!

Seems in the last ten years or more that vets realized they have a medical degree that took many dollars and years to achieve. With that in mind, I still must protest the fees they charge for many commonplace stuations. How about $250 per dog for teeth cleaning (incl. anesthesia). They overcharge on many supplements too. Do not buy those things from your vet, check the internet instead.

As a veterinarian who went into the profession for the "right" reasons (most do), I can say that it's very difficult to stay afloat in the business. We don't have the luxury of sending our patients to Pueblo Radiology, nor do we have the luxury of using a beautiful surgical suite that SOMEONE ELSE pays for... we have to buy it all ourselves. It's hundreds of thousands of dollars in equipment. I always felt I should at least OFFER the very most advanced care - not because of $$, but because it was best for the animal and many owners expect it. Yes, minimal measures can "work" (the body had an amazing ability to heal) but I resent the idea that we're all money hungry. I made HUGE sacrifices, missing important family events, etc. for emergencies and STILL had trouble collecting fees owed to me. Animal ownership is a responsibility - with that comes some expense if they're sick or injured. I miss working with the animals, but I'm glad I saw this thread. It reminds me of why I quit.

I don't think it was a personal attack on veterinarians, and boy am I grateful for our veterinarian who saved our kitties life recently. It's just there is nothing "inexpensive" today. Whether it's groceries, people doctors, rent, etc. Everything is expensive.
