The place at the end of Kellogg road by the drive-in theater lot is very prompt and also affordable

Safelite mobile repair is very good. I don't know the name of the specific person that performed the work.

ABS Glass has my vote.

I'd vote for windshield replacement. I used the axxess card and ABS glass once for two cars (at the same time) and they cut me a deal for 100 bucks even. Paid for the axxess card several times!

I'm the OP...can you get a windshield 'repaired' if there is a small crack, approx 8" long, or, do I need replacement?...the few ads I found in the phonebook say, 'rock chip' repair.

I think they can only repair if it's a small pit, not a crack? Regardless, 8" might be too big anyway. I've had my windshield replaced twice from things hitting it while driving on the freeway and both times I went to A&B glass--they were fast and did a great job (they also offer OEM glass if that matters to you).

The very first comment about the guy at the end of Kellogg by the old drive in is right on. He charges about 50 persent less than anyone else in town and I sat and watched him and he was really thorough and meticulou!

Just had to replace the windshield on my brand new Miata -- a gravel pebble kicked up on the freeway (thank you Caltrans) and cracked it; the crack then spread over the course of a few weeks until it was evident that I needed to replace the windshield or perhaps have the whole thing shatter on me at some inopportune moment.

Took it to the dealership -- Mazda wanted $395 to replace it, but found a "post factory" replacement deal for me for $230. I jumped on it. Looks like new.

Like EDHATBARBARA, I too had the hairline fracture that just seemed to be getting longer every day.

The ABS glass place has been recommended to me by a few trustworthy friends, so I guess I'll be making a stop in there soon.

I've had a few more rocks hit the windshield since then, none have cracked it but I think the construction is really causing a lot of this lately.

The standard seems to be that if the damage can be covered by a dime, repairs can be done but, depending on the nature of the crack, it may or may not hold.

If the crack is longer than can be covered by a one dollar bill, then the windshield must be replaced. Safe-T glass comes to my house and does the work in my garage, very well, every time.

Best Price Auto Glass at the end of Kellogg did me right. They ordered a windshield without any deposit, replaced it while I waited, about 45 minutes. Wow they don't come out easily at all. $165 plus tax. Very pleased. Looks like new.

I had a rock kicked up in the windshield recently-smaller then a dime, but pitted. Because of work I went to Apex in Santa Maria. Fast, efficient, and because I took it in, $39!!!

Ron Cook has fixed about three of those small cracks for us. He charged us $59 but gave us a discount the last time. He comes to the house, which is really convenient.

Incidentally, don't let these small cracks spread - once they get over what, half an inch? - it's a new windshield.

Best Price Auto Glass does a great job and the price is affordable. I've used them three times. Usually takes 45 min to an hour. Drive all the way out Kellogg toward UCSB and past the old twin screens drive in to the end of the road.

Safelite- absolutely make sure you request Billy. Everyone else at Safelite is completely incompetent, but Billy is amazing.

Call your insurance agent -- they normally have this type of info.

Usually 2" or Less is a good candidate for a chip repair. A resin glue is injected in the crack which usually stops the crack from spreading any further. It is mainly a structural fix and not so much of a cosmetic fix. Rock chip repairs are economical and eco-friendly.
