What are they going to build where Whitefoots used to be? I liked them a lot.

A convenience store, a cheaper variety of TJ's - it was mentioned here but I forget the name; perhaps someone else will volunteer it.

Fresh and Easy, a non local corporation, has displaced 5 popular, long time, locally owned shops. Progress?

What does the OP mean by "old-fashioned"? As in, you bring your cow to the butcher for butchering? Or a store with pre-cut cuts of meat?

Scolari's sells California Harris Ranch beef. And Gelson's will get you just what you want or hand cut things for you.

Whitefoots also was set in one of the more attractive buildings (!) on Milpas so of course they had to tear it down to construct the new improved version. Where's Joni Mitchell?

We are losing all the 'old fashioned' markets, retail businesses, restaurants, in Santa Barbara. Ye Old Butcher Shop is a sandwich and not interesting place at all. I used to go there all the time - but no more. Country Catering (Goleta next to Zodo's) is one of the last places to buy meat in that type of environment _ VERY EXPENSIVE. Gelson's has VERY expensive meats (and just about everything else).

Shalhoobs doesn't cut meat anymore, which is sad. Santa Cruz only uses 'select' as opposed to choice or prime. Yuck. So sad...

You're just going to have to experiment. There's a tidy little market on Haley near White's Pet Hospital (n0. I am not implying anything) that cuts a mean steak and has good pork. The butchers at Montecito Village Market ditto. When you bemoan the loss of independent butchers, grocers and bakers look to Farm Subsidies and massive processing/production. Butchers no longer buy a side of beef and cut it in house because there is too much waste (ie less than desired cuts). A steer weighing 1500# only has 2 tenderloins, about 18 NY steaks - meat eaters must learn to use other cuts. In the meantime if you truly want a high quality product, shop the Farmer's markets - Rancho San Julian, Marcie's Family Farm, Dey Dey's Beef & happy Family farms

The Whitefoot location might be where Fresh & Easy is going to be. Seems small for it, but maybe.

961P brings up a very valid point. A better question would be; where can we find affordable choice or prime cuts of meat in Santa Barbara? Select is passable, not a great cut of meat. Farmer's markets can sometimes be a good choice, especially for organic meats, but can also be rather expensive. What is the name of that little Market on Haley? Anyone else have experience with them?

I read in the Independent that it is supposed to be Fresh & Easy, eventually.
