Santa Barbara Fish Market. They also have frozen calamari steaks.

I believe the whole calamari you can buy in the case at SB Fish Market is previously frozen and comes out of those boxes you can find in the freezer section elsewhere. At least that's what they told me last time I was in there. I'd love to get my hands on some fresh local squid, hopefully someone can chime in with a source.

i've been told that our local squid is shipped elsewhere for processing & thus there is no such thing as local calamari (ie, "processed" squid). i'd love to be wrong about that.

@151593 I believe you are correct, but I'd love to be proven wrong. I could have sworn I have seen it for sale by one of the fish monger stands at the Saturday Farmers' Market some years back.

Neither of you are wrong nor right, it is the fisherman's choice to who he sells his product too, the SB Fish Market and at times will have fresh calamari if available, yet most of the time it is frozen. I'm sure the same goes for Kanaloa.

Unfortunately, there are no fresh calamari in SB. Dec. 19, 2009 I read an article I the News Press, picked up from the Ventura Star (you can google it) and the article talked about the huge calamari catch in Ventura and Santa Barbara. I called their staff writer and sure enough the catch was huge and absolutely NONE are sold in SB. Last week I noticed some fresh looking calamari in WholeFoods and the fish guy said they were fresh. However, I was there yesterday and their calamari looked entirely different and in my opinion, were previously frozen. I didn’t ask, but I would be very surprised, but pleasantly surprised if they were fresh. Please post if you find any.
