Does anyone have any good ideas for a date night for those of us under 21? I kind of feel as if I've done almost everything in town.

A light meal down by the waterfront and a long walk along the water. One of my fondest memories was a beautiful evening walking along the waterfront, on top of the wall sometimes by the sidewalk, and looking out over the ocean with all the lights twinkling at the Harbor at night. Very romantic! or Have a picnic at the beach and then go to one of the many wonderful music events/plays/concerts that are held around town and are put on by one of the local schools or colleges. The Hello Dolly musical is playing this evening.

Are you saying you have done pretty much everything in tow and there is nothing you found that you don't want to do again? Interesting situation. Seems like plays and concerts, lectures, events at UCSB offer a continual array of new things to do - and most of what UCSB offers is low-cost. If a date is only to superficially impress rather than create a setting to explore shared or new interests, you have to respond differently. Instead of date night, a surprising treat is seeing the Live and the Met HD Opera series at 10am on some Saturdays at the Arlington Theater- everyone I know around the world who has been seeing these large screen, sub-titled and moderated opera productions have been blown away and that might create a surprising new interest as well as thoughtful discussions about the plot twists and turns which deal with bold swaths of human emotions and conflicts.

How about doing something totally "touristy" .... We have done this, and it can be fun seeing your city from that perspective. Try the 'Land Shark', or 'Little Toot', or a sunset cruise on 'Sunset Kidd' for some water themed ideas. If you have some $$ to burn, take a whale watching cruise or trip out to our islands. Rent one of the wheeled thingys down on Cabrillo Blvd. Take your own downtown walking tour and visit all the historic sites and end up at the top of the courthouse around sunset time. There is no way to run out of stuff to do in this city!....get creative, and have fun!

Have you: 1. Had a picnic on the Mission lawn at sunset 2. Volunteered at Foodbank - it will make your every day food taste better 3. Gotten take out Chinese food (or other cuisine) and taken it to Shoreline Park or Goleta Beach to consume it at one of their benches. 4. Eaten at the santa barbara city college culinary institute 5. Biked the bike paths along the ocean: UCSB to Modoc or Downtown - especially on a full moon night 6. Gone bowling in Goleta 7. Visited the butterfly reserve in Goleta 8. Done all the hikes in and around Sanrta Barbara 9. Volunteered at Dawg (take a licking, keep on ticking) 10. Gone to all 5 farmer's markets 11. Taken a "road trip" to walk the Sweetwater trail around lake Cachuma 12. Walked around Lake Los Carneros, viewed the birds, toured Stowe House This is just a short list. Maybe it will inspire other to add to it. (I HATE it when people say there is nothing to do here.)

One of the most stunning back yard treats if you have a car is the Oso Flaco Lake boardwalk beach walk to the roaring ocean. Stunning. North of Guadalupe which has its own local charms as well.

It's not about what you do, it is about who you're with. Stop, sit down look one another in the eye and tell them something revealing about yourself.

Pick a time with low tide.... combine some of the great food in IV (Freedird's, Sushiya, Korean Tacos, Schwerma) with a walk on the beach in IV. Could combine with a play, dance performance, or lecture at UCSB, or Improvability or Magic Lantern on a Friday night.

One of our first dates was a long quiet dinner and lots of great conversation at Cold Springs Tavern and 20 years later we are still together. Daytime dates of surfing or hiking some of our beautiful trails are also great dates (add a picnic - even better)!

Get involved in making something happen! There are a few people in discussion about starting The Living Room back up again. A possible space has even been located. If you want to help I suggest you contact Roger Perry at Perry Insurance Services or Jeff Theimer of New Noise Music. You can probably find them both on Face Book. Be good for them to have the input of the people they are wanting to serve.

When we were 21, my wife and I bought an Entertainment Express book for $10 at the grocery store and would try out new restaurants that we had never known about before. At 2for1, even if the place was no good, it was half-off!
