Mojito
updated: Jun 03, 2011, 9:53 AM

Our good friend is getting her PhD today and her only interest is to have a nice Mojito (she is not a big drinker). Where is the best Mojito in the SB area?

PS - we are responsible drinkers and non-drivers!

Boathouse at Hendry's Beach makes a good one. Go there for happy hour and enjoy the view. Seems like it would be a good fit for a celebratory drink.

Milk and Honey (downtown) or Alcazar (on the Mesa). Both make an amazing ginger mojito with sugar cane and have a lot of other very interesting drinks.

Milk and Honey - you would need to go to Cuba to get anything like their Mojito.

Cafe Buenos Aires (on the east side of State north of Victoria, across from Carlito's) is closed.

I also agree with Milk and Honey. They've got a promotion going on Edhat that you can buy $40 worth of food and drinks for $18. But you can't use the coupon until tomorrow (Sat) and she's celebrating today. Just go for it!

Congratulations on this wonderful accomplishment and I hope she gets the mojito of her dreams!

I just got my PhD from UCSB as well. The first thing my adviser told me to do was to file for unemployment.

Best advice I received in 7 years of grad school!

At my place! (No mint bits in your teeth with this recipe!)

Steep fresh mint leaves in hot simple syrup [look it up]. Cool and strain mint syrup into a small pitcher, discard leaves.

Juice a whole bunch of limes (key limes or Mexican limes best) and put juice in a different small pitcher.

Fill glasses with ice cubes, put a nice sprig of fresh mint in each, add some white rum, mint syrup and lime juice to taste, and some club soda and stir gently -- fabulous!

The secret is in the proportions of the four liquids. Experiment till you get it right.

179382 - you're totally right. I didn't know we were eligible for unemployment in between the piecemeal grants projects and short-term lecturer positions that phds tend to get. Then I saw someone else filing for unemployment and realized that we are eligible too, just like carpenters who don't get work during the winter. There are a lot of biomedical postdocs etc. who are scrambling for jobs right now.

Alcazar. Funky and fun. Great Mojjito. Iffy service at times but worth the wait. On the Mesa next to Rose Cafe.

Bartender Abenel at Pascucci's makes the best Mojitos. Last week he made us a mojito with cucumber. Amazingly good.

I was at Eos (Anacapa & Haley) the other day, and everyone was drinking a watermelon mojito. Watermelon chunks and fresh mint. Looked very tasty. They sell them by the pitcher as well.

Arnoldi's - they have an herb garden out back so you get fresh picked mint!
