Referral Regarding Rats
updated: Jun 06, 2011, 5:25 PM

I have a persistent problem with rats in the attic. I wonder if anyone could recommend a pest control person who could permanently get rid of them. About how much would this cost for a small ranch-style home? Thanks.

Sorry, I can't resist; "rats in the attic" just sounds like such a great way to describe someone - as in:
"What's wrong with her?"
"Oh nothing, she just has a few rats in the attic."

Owning a home with a crawl space underneath (the entire square footage of the house), and having had a BAD ray problem years ago, these are my suggestions:

No one you hire can be as vigilant as you can be.

It is imperative you figure out what is drawing them to your property and that space in particular (for us, we were feeding birds and the excess seed was drawing the rats). Eliminate the cause.

Trap, trap and trap. We used three different kinds, electric, jaw-style, and old-school, set with various things like dog kibble, cheese and peanut butter. Check traps morning and night to dispose of the carcasses. Rats are surprisingly intelligent and will become wary of traps if they see dead rats in them. Within a week we had trapped nearly 10 full grown rats - I felt terrible about it but it was better than poison, and we haven't had a problem since.

Whatever you do, I wish you luck. Having your home invaded by pests is so stressful.

3 words for you: LENZ PEST CONTROL ...we had the same issue. They are super easy to work with, very professional, very competitively priced and best part, NO more rats! Sealed up all the entry points we had no idea were there, set and checked traps for 2 weeks and disposed of all the carcasses + found a dead possum and other rodents under the house and removed them too....Love these guys...thank you Gabe!

The main issue is entry points into your home...we had lots of "holes" in the foundation vents and roof vents, dryer vent, etc, also had critters tunnel under the foundation.....so small and obscure we didn't know they were there, Lenz found them and sealed em' up.....VERY IMPORTANT!!

Use Hydrex only if you want to pay for many repeat visits under contract. Solving the problem is not as important as repeatedly servicing your home at your expense. At least this was my experience with them vis a vis termites.

Western Exterminating Company. They are good and they are honest. They will tell you how to get rid of the ones that are there, how they are getting in and how to make sure they can't get in anymore.

Until the rats are gone, if you need to store things in the attic, you might try Behrens 6 gallon metal cans with locking lids. They sell them at home depot. Like little bitty metal trash cans. Designed to be rodent proof. Rats will chew right through plastic. You can also order from Channel City lumber on Aero Camino in 6 or 10 gallon sizes. Made in usa.

The best in town is ERADICATORS. Owner Steve Putnam, better known as Ratman, is amazing. I had him at my house and watched him corner a rat and take him out of my house alive, like he was the Pied Piper. Never saw anything like it. I have hard similar stories from other customers. His "no kill" attitude and removal methods makes him unique. He's great with gopher problems too.

Andy was referred to us by animal control when we had a racoon problem at our house in the upper crawl space. I call him the animal guy so I'm sure he could help with your rat problem too. Since we are renters the landlord paid so I'm not sure how much he charges.

CAT(S)! Not all cats will be good ratters but ASAP, the cat shelter, can pick one out for you. No pesticides and chemicals, just love when the cat is off-duty. And round-the-year control.

Get a cat, a mean ol' barnyard kind. My cat sometimes escapes from the house and within 20 minutes he's back at our door with a mouse in his mouth. Although sometimes he catches and releases just to play and swat them around.

A friend gave me a good tip (I think) so I thought I'd pass it along.
When setting rat or mousetraps, put them inside paper bags, so when you have to dispose of the rodent they're already "bagged up" and you don't have to touch them. fyi
