Attention Basset Lovers and Pet Parents.
I need a vet referral for my newly adopted daughter, a Basset hound.
I am looking for a compassionate vet that knows about Bassets. They need special health care, as most Basset parents know.
Hope you can help with a referral.

Don't know about bassets but we are very happy with the SB Pet Hospital on the Mesa. They take great care of our two 14+ canines - one pure bred; one not. Also have no problem with us getting cheaper drugs on the internet. We've been going to them for more than 10 years

I too am unsure about the bassett specialty (sorry) but Dr. Steve Lewis at Airport Animal Hospital 968-4300 at Storke/Hollister is wonderful. Our family has been going to him for years and have been very happy. Congrats on the new addition!

A plug for my favorite vet, (do not know about her experience with Basset Hounds), Dr. Lexi Rugg at Valley Animal Hospital on Fairview at Hollister. Very personalized care, and knowledgeable!

St. Francis downtown or San Roque mid-town. I've heard that there's one great vet and one not so good at La Cumbre, and I can say without question that White's on Haley should be avoided at any cost.

OP here. Yes that's what I said, daughter--- she's my little girl. True animal lovers will understand. "Pet" is so diminishing to an animal and "owner" suggests she is property. She is a new member of our family. So, Yes she is my daughter. I also refuse to feed her cr@p commercial dog food and cook human grade food for her myself. and before you go there, yes I have a life, hobbies, friends etc.

Then I suggest you go be with the animals rather than elevating an animal to the level of a human. What this world needs is more humanity, not more anthropomorphism; more care for kids that may not be your own, not more pampered pets crapping on the school playing fields. And before you go there, I've had and loved dogs all my life. But I remember that they are dogs!!

I highly recommend La Conception Animal Hospital - both because I use them myself and because your attitude toward your "daughter" fits the way both Dr. Dalo and Dr. Zaboly work. My dogs are now and have always been part of my family too. You can look them up on the web at www.laconcepcionanimalvet.com.

San Roque is good but I think the Carp vet specializes in dogs like that. Bulldogs, Bassets, Char Pei, etc.

Sadly, I have to agree with 349; don't want to get into too much detail, but it should not take close to 1/2 hour for a small dog to "cross the bridge" with medical assistance.

The manager of Dargan's downtown has a couple of Bassett hounds. You could ask him maybe. He loves to talk about his fur children and he's got a brand new real human son too just added to his family.

I agree with 9283 in recommending Santa Barbara Pet Hospital. I have found Dr. Mckenzie Rasmussen in particular, to be very well informed on breeds. In my case it was an English Bulldog and a French Bulldog. Dr. Rasmussen is soft spoken, articulate and quite informative. I'm sure you can call and ask if she is familiar with the breed, but I think you'll be happy with her ability to care for your Basset hound. Enjoy your new addition!

whenever i get meat from the market to bbq, i always name it before marinating and throwing it on the grill. that way, i dont 'diminish' the animal. sometimes i wonder about us.

We have 2 Bassets currently and have had other scent-hounds...We take ours to White's. Yes, they are expensive, but seem to know what they are doing. Treatment options are discussed and we have been given the opportunity to select what tests/lab work/procedures, etc. we want done. Also, they are open and staffed all day, 7 days a week, which is great for working folks.

Dr Lewis past his prime? We found him to be both compassionate and practical. Other vets nearby always made every malady sound like a death sentence. Dr Lewis realizes that dogs are resilient animals and always provides a reasonable level of care to accommodate our budget. When our allergic dog was stung by a bee, he gave us additional syringes of antihistamine so we wouldn't have to make an expensive visit when the inquisitive hunter caught another stinger in the mush.

I have three close personal friends who have had nightmarish tales of their experience at White's. It's been about 9 months since the last one, so perhaps things have changed, but my boys aren't going anywhere near the place. I don't know about Bassets in particular, but as said above, St. Francis has always been great for us and several other "parents" and their 4-legged family members.

I am not sure why people have to ding the poster for calling her dog her daughter. So, you who criticized her....if the notion does not fit your life, then you are free to not use the word. What good comes of disapproving of her choice? I agree, Dr. Morgan is great with breeds prone to skin, spine and ear issues like a Basset. San Roque is pointless. You can never park, get an appt., or be seen in an emergency.

St Francis. Dr Faoro the owner last week did surgery on our Frenchie who was hemorrhaging in her stomach and had lost half her blood; spent a good part of the day working on her, most definitely saved her life and then charged well below what we had expected. She is doing fine and he is now our new vet. Great clinic to use, highest quality work, friendly and non-patronizing ... and you don't get reamed.

I ask for Dr. Otto specifically, due to our long relationship over the years with many of my furry friends. If anyone needs a bunny expert, he's the man!

There are some great vets in town, I would just recommend staying away from the new "Angel" Vet Clinic on Hollister. I've had an awful experience with that vet - both in the way my beloved pet was treated and the way I was treated. I would ask for a short meet and greet with a potential new vet to ask some questions about their familiarity with the breed as well as to gauge your comfort level with them meeting you and your dog. Congratulations on your adoption!
