Does anyone know the best place in SB to buy assorted "less desirable" turkey
parts such as the neck, wings, etc without having to buy a whole bird?
I always make homemade turkey stock to use in the big meal and these are the best
and most affordable parts for the job. Thanks.

Maybe check with some of the bigger butchers in town - call Shalhoobs they have turkeys and might have a good deal on the "parts" 805 963-7733.

Ralph's has wings, drumsticks, thighs year round. As for the neck, I will donate mine.

Go to any butcher shop they will fix you up. Don't you just love Thanksgiving. I do! I used to have some friends you live on La Ramada. We would sometimes see them on Thanksgiving. I wonder what they are doing this Thanksgiving.

What do people have against the neck? It's all strained out by the time it makes it your table and makes for a yummy stock. Making your own turkey stock is really easy and makes your dishes even better. I'll even make my gravy ahead of time with it and then just add in the drippings from the roasted bird they day of. That way you can make sure there is plenty of gravy for all!

465P - I would imagine that your "old" friends won't let you come over anymore either, correct? Did you ever drive thru the old neighborhood to look at the trees? Sounds like you need new friends... good luck with that. Oh well, I hope you have some great holidays regardless!!!

Try Country Meat Market, we get the neck and giblets when we order our turkeys but we have to ask for it.

Do you think butchers would do the same for chicken parts? I mean sell or give them to you? I have a couple of necks saved from butterflying chickens, and I'd like to make a stock also, but not sure the next time I'll be cooking a whole chicken.

Well played 477. Little creepy having 465P as a neighbor. To answer her question...I think they would be hiding. (If you know what I mean) As to the original poster: When you buy a bird, these parts come with it. What did you do with them?? Off subject but related here specifically: Does the Camarillo State Mental Hospital keep records of where they relocated the patients when they changed to the University?? Are there a lot of them here in SB?? Do they have access to computers???

I just talked to the butcher, Luis at Five Points Albertsons. He said no problem with getting 5lbs. turkey wings (1.99/lb). I was going to make the turkey stock in this month's Bon Appetite.

Apples, shitake mushrooms, marmite, and/or dark soy sauce are all great things to add to a turkey stock that you don't often think of.

But I did think of them. I'll bet you didn't think of syrup, and corn flakes, and pop corn, and wheat thins and old pizza crust.

495: The hospital was shut down for years before it became the University. Generally speaking, many of the people locked away in mental institutes were released a few decades ago, and those that HAD to stay went to one of the few remaining facilities (it's somewhere north of here, but I don't recall where exactly). And I agree with you regarding 465P.

I don't often think of dried apricots, and peanut butter and cream cheese, and ranch dressing and old Holloween candy. 507 is right. I don't often think of a lot of things.

Ummmm....516......ummm.........I think 495 was making a joke about the people on this site. Just a thought. I believe he was pointing to the thread as being something only insane people would comment on......or even some of the comments as ones that were a little spooky or a bit off, like say 465P. That you have a little working knowlege of the CSMH is good......but I think an answer to a "tongue in cheek" question. Just sayin. Happy Turkey Day anyhow.

What a weird thread of comments. Someone posted along the lines of: go to any butcher. But what butchers remain in SB/Goleta? Country Meat Market and Shalhoob's are the only two I can think of. For some reason I'd never think of asking at the meat counter of a chain grocery store. Maybe I should try there. I work near Santa Cruz market in Goleta, I wonder if they keep those parts for sale... Cool question to post. Wish there hadn't been so many off-topic posts, but I waded through OK...

477, 495 and 516 Easy for you pass judgement you are not the one who lost the good friend. Holidays always make me kinda of sad. Especially as I do not have my good friends from La Ramada any more (they may have gotten mad at me) however I don't want to get off topic here., So You can get great Turkey parts from any local butcher shop. I generally don't like to eat the exotic parts of the turkey, like the gizzard, neck, or other parts. I like the white and dark meat only. Thank you for your support. By the way you don't happen to live on La Ramada?

Gelsons sells raw (from the butcher) and cooked turkey parts (from the deli). You can get a leg or thigh, delicious stuffing and gravy from the deli most afternoons.

This is the best thread: I laughed so hard = super-wonderful. I don't have a clue what the La Ramada posts are about. But, *Ramada* def. = An open shelter, often having a dome-shaped thatched roof, and installed esp. on beaches and picnic grounds. _Wow, now I want to visit La Ramada in person. I just wish I could meet up there with 477, 495, 513, 517, 630, & 942: You could do the comic-commentary and I would be the groupie, if you would let me wear a dome-shaped thatched-hat. I still remember eating turkey necks as a child = delicious. And_thanks to the OP for the Q of the day.
