updated: Nov 30, 2011, 5:23 PM
My family is looking for a nice, low-key Christmas dinner out. Does anyone know
which restaurants will be offering Christmas dinner 2011?

I had a great 3-course Thanksgiving dinner at the Plow & Angel at San Ysidro Ranch for $58. Perfect atmosphere with the roaring fire without the high prices of The Stonehouse upstairs.

If you check the city's website they usually have a listing, that's where I found the ones open for Thanksgiving. I just looked but didn't see it as of yet...maybe it's too early? If you look up the Thanksgiving ones, they would probably be open for Christmas too?

I second the Plow and Angel. It's actually a really nice place to spend a holiday and they are low key and it looks festive and lovely. It's not as expensive as you'd think for the quality of food.

If you like to watch the sandpipers scurry back and forth on the sand at sunset and then under the floodlights, I wholeheartedly endorse the relaxed fine dining at the Goleta Beach Bar and Grill. Call for resvs. My family have enjoyed many holiday events there for years.

Try John Dickson's 'Restaurant Guy' site. He'll probably make a convenient list of establishments.

Jack-in-the-Box is open everyday. Try their new Turkey Tacoritto, a side of Elfin Rings, and a delicious Santa Shake-a-roo! Yum!

Many of the restaurants that are open for Thanksgiving close for Christmas. $58 is a bit beyond our budget but we have tried wirh success both Whole Foods or Gelson's take out Christmas dinner. There are also Von's or Ralphs. They all have a good varietyy of choices. Moby Dick is a reasonable option too.

We used to like Fess Parker's but haven't been there in a while so not sure of the food, but the view is fabulous, and it's wonderful to stroll Carrillo Boulevard in the afternoon on a Christmas day when our relatives east can't go outside at all.

@996, not everyone is Christian and/or celebrates Christmas. It's not really "family day" for all of us. :) It's not really that horrible when you consider that most waiters at a decent restaurant will get time and a half for serving and in my experience, people sign up to work weeks or months in advance on this holiday and New Year's Eve so those who really want it off usually can take the day/night off.

Flavor of India had their buffet open last Christmas and it was great. I'm 99% sure it was the same price as any other day.

@092 ... Waiters/Waitresses don't make minimum wage, they rely on tips, and a dollar or two an hour. When I was a waiter it was not an option NOT to work on holidays unless I wanted to be fired. Not so nice for employees. You may want to remember that when you leave a tip for them this holiday season. That goes for all service professionals. It's kind of ridiculous that we can't have a single day of non-consumerism in our world. Would the world just stop turning if we had an entire day off with no where to go and spend money?

THANK YOU, to those of you sticking up for the servers who have to work on holidays... it's true, a lot of places require you to work on holidays and it DOES suck. I'd much rather be home w/ my family. Servers don't get time and a half or any other special holiday wage, they don't get benefits or health insurance or vacation. They merely rely on the kindness of those they are waiting on. Be generous and kind this holiday season... if you are eating out show your grattitude to your server who has to work on Christmas Day by TIPPING BIG!!! It's the right thing to do.
