Not very close, but Jerry's Famous Deli rings my bell when I need a fix of the old "schmaltz." Locations in Woodland Hills, Encino would be closest. If I really need it I fly to NYC and the Carnegie Deli.

Unfortunately, I've never gotten decent matzo ball soup in SB. To make matters worse, there's only ONE market in the area (Gelson's) that sells rendered chicken fat for the making of matzo ball soup--and that's only during Jewish high holidays.

Yep, Sly's is the only game in town for a half way decent matzo ball soup.

I dream about the Carnegie Deli in NYC, and I've only been there once! Agree, Jerry's has very good Matzo Ball soup. Only get there infrequently, when I'm down that way. Thanks for the nod to Sly's...will definitely try their schmaltz!

I had it at Lucky's, the steak house on Coast Village Road in Montecito. It was $10. Expensive but good. Apparently it's some manager's Jewish mother's traditional, secret recipe. I'd have it there again, that's how good it was. (And my very own matzah-ball-soup-making -Jewish mother lives right here in town). It even had the edge on Jerry's in LA.

I dream even more about visiting Carnegie Deli since I've only seen it in "Broadway Danny Rose."

Not sure if it's offered daily, but a couple weeks ago I picked some up from Whole Foods (in their prepared foods/deli area). It was delicious!

OP here, thanks for the recommendations! All this soup talk got me to thinking about Kreplach soup, which is the Jewish equivalent of ravioli's, also served in that amazing broth. Oh heck, Jerry's Deli here I come...

Instead of feeling bad about not having a great Jewish deli in town, can't we convince someone to open one up? We were able to get a Whole Foods, REI, Bevmo... seems this one would be lots easier? Maybe an SB chapter of Jerry's?

Nate N Al's in Beverly Hills has the best Matzo Ball soup. Its right across the street from the cheese shop. My ex friend from La Ramada who used to work at the cheese shop told me about Nate N Al's. You should go there.

I'm the first poster who said Jerry's down south and Carnegie if in New York. Now, in an emergency look in the local markets for Manischewitz brand products. They have a matzoh ball soup that may hold you over until you can get a proper fix.

ARCHIE - For me the more sodium the better. Yum. Not very healthy, though. Oh, well, what - me worry?

856 & ARCHIE - I note that even Manischewitz has "gotten religion." They have a line of reduced sodium soups.

621- I have been asking for YEARS why don't we have a great Kosher Deli /Market in the Santa Barbara area. There certainly is a need. Where do those who keep Kosher buy their food? I do know there are some who drive to LA. Whoever is smart enough to open a Kosher Deli/Market would maake a fortune!

@929 - Is the local Jewish community large enough to support a Kosher market? As in most religions, many of the younger generation of Jews don't practice the traditions or keep Kosher. Most local markets carry a Kosher products section so the need you describe may not be vital.
