Can anyone recommend a place in Santa Barbara to get travel vaccinations at a reasonable price?

Vaccinations for you or our pets? I have never heard of vaccinations needed to travel, are you talking about TB or something? Where are you visiting?

The least expensive method is to order vaccines from the pharmacy and have your doctor inject you. But I recommend Dr. Scully as a travel MD.

Dr. Scully at Sansum will review your itinerary and check to see what all you might need - with up to the minute CDC and destination countries requirements.

I've been to Tanzania and didn't need any of that. Got malaria pills as a precaution but never used them. Don't inject the YF virus, it isn't worth it, plus you can get treated there if you happen to get the almost obsolete virus. Most Dr.s here don't even carry YF, and if they do it is very expensive. Enjoy your trip, awesome country with good surfing.

881 here. Be sure you are also up to date on all immunizations: tetanus/whooping cough, flu, etc. If you've never had measles - get immunized for that too.

Costco used to do it and Sansum. The old office of Bob Young on Milpas, who has passed away now, however don't know if someone took over his practice and continued providing the service.

By using the CDC's guidelines for travellers (Center for Disease Control), most physicians can advise you on what meds or vaccinations are required for travel. You don't need a "travel medicine" specialist for this advice. Your own doctor should be able to handle this. The problem may be where then to obtain them since they can be expensive to stock in an office. Costco buys in bulk and usually has vaccines and a pharmacist who can give them.

@905... Dr. Young passed his practice on to Dr. Scott Saunders, MD and Dr. Kristi Wrightson, ND, MS, RD. They're on East Arrellaga across from the old St. Francis site.

CDC website says yellow fever vaccination is "generally not recommended" for travelers to Tanzania. It's one of the more uncomfortable vaccinations, so don't get it if you don't have to.

I believe that Costco does them and you do not have to be a member to use the pharmacy. However, you cannot use a check and have to pay cash. It is also possible that you could use an American Express Card, but I am not sure about that. Call them first. Goleta Costco Pharmacy number is 685-4141.

I saw Dr Scully before a trip to Asia last summer and I highly recomend her. My insurance covered the cost of the vacinations so I can't tell you if the cost was reasonable.

If you require multiple vaccinations, it would be good to space them out over a few weeks if you have time. My mother had multiple, simultaneous vaccinations, and had nervous system trouble for years. The body needs to time to deal with each vaccination.

I'm telling you all you need is to be current on all shots, if you see a PCP once a year or so you should be fine. As for Tanzania, unless you plan on trekking in the woods for extended periods of time or sleeping under the stars, not recommended, I assure you your chances are nil. I was on the coast for a while and really didn't think about it. There are lots of mosquitoes in swampy areas, and you need to sleep under netting at night.

I was suggested to look into Malaria pills for a region of Ecuador I'll be filming in (Tena and Upper Amazon). Be there in three weeks. I've also heard long sleeves and pants help a lot.

I agree w 900. Get up to date with all your immunizatiins before leaving. Also recom Sansum. My son went before his trip to costa rica. They were a great help and he went w meds in hand as opposed to searching out a doctor there.

I went around the very expensive route and went down to Ventura. Their county health dept has a fabulous clinic for travel vaccinations. I made an appointment, and when I arrived they spent lots of time with me in counseling about what is needed and how to protect myself; then I got the shots. All at about HALF THE COST of any option here in SB. No extra fee for the "office visit", etc. Go to vchca.org/publichealth and click on the drop down menu for "public health" and then for "travel vaccinations"
