I'm trying to find out more about a strange, frankly unbelievable, story a couple of people witnessed this weekend at Earth Day. Saturday, on the Live Green Stage, a woman demonstrating the workings/strength of crabs was holding a live crab. Suddenly she slammed it on a piece of wood on stage, shattering the creature in front of the audience; body parts (innards) went flying. Does anyone have more information about this?

Hopefully the crab was not still attached to the poor person's genitals.

This was not demonstrating the workings/strength of the crab but how to prepare and cook live crab. People avoid cooking them themselves because they swear they hear a scream when they put crab into a boiling pot of water. Splitting them in half is a way to quickly kill the animal prior to cooking it.

I heard it's ok to kill any living animal as long as your car gets over 45mpg. Driving a car that gets good mileage proves you care about the earth more than any other action.

Hope it's just a rumor. Doesn't sound like it should be something allowed at Earth Day.

One doesn't smash a crab to kill it before eating. There are better ways if you don't want to put it in boiling water. And, no, they don't scream. They don't have vocal cords nor do lobsters.

crustaceans don't "scream." It is the air escaping the endoskeleton when being boiled or steamed.

The reason this was at Earth Day was to get people to eat local seafood. There are many ways to prep and clean crab, this is one of them. If it doesn't work for you then don't do it but it is a great way to quickly kill and clean them.

I heard it's ok to kill and eat any live animal as long as you wear hemp clothing, smoke weed, AND drive a car that gets 45 or more mpg. And oppose all drilling, even though people seriously need jobs and green energy is only 2.3% of the state's total employment. Oh yeah, and let the farms in the valley become dust bowls because a little fish got caught in the pumps. 50% unemployment in the valley is bad, but that little fish is important! Speaking of those, don't eat steelhead trout. We all need to care about the earth, and these are the actions that prove you care!

I found the Earth Day schedule online and apparently there was a seafood demonstration on the Live Green Stage. Perhaps this was the "frankly unbelievable" event that the OP -- who wasn't there -- could have looked up.

I am in the crab business , and though I was not there I can tell you that if a crab is allowed to close down a pincher onto your finger , they are like a hydrolic press and just keep increasing the "bite" until they either break your finger or you hurl them against something to smash and kill them . You can still cook them if you put them in boiling water immediately . If you delay cooking ,thier meat becomes spoiled with an ammonia like compound caused by decomposition and becomes poisiness to humans.

There were so many booths using wax coated cups that aren't recyclable and lots of paper handouts that ended up on the ground. There were many very cool things and lots of yummy free snacks, including a booth that gave out fresh oranges that we indulged in but sad to see many non-recyclable items there.

Two Earth Weekend observations: @005 The trash in the park was amazing! Also, there was a lot of litter in the neighborhood. It would be nice if the City would require organizers of events to clean up the neighbor after an event in the park. Cox Cable had a "clean" truck there to promote how green a company they are. What a joke! Check out how hot your cable box is! Now that Cox Box is one heck of an energy vampire. Quite possibily the worse energy waster in the house. Can't they provide more efficient boxes? Can't the City Council require more efficient boxes since they are the ones that grant Cox its monoply?

It was a cooking demonstration. It did occur, as I happened by when it was going on. Personally, I don't see it as any less humane than popping them into boiling water. YMMV.

The demo was for the new Community Supported Fishery (CSF) that they are trying to start in the SB area. It is very similar to the Community Supported Agriculture program, but instead of a basket of veggies, you get a basket of sea food. We have a quality rock crab fishery in the Santa Barbara area. Many of the lobster fishermen are crab fishermen when lobster is out of season. Oyster, mussels, spot prawns, and many different types of fish will also be available in this program. I can see how this would be surprising the the casual observer, but it is either toss the live crab in boiling water and get the flavor of guts in the meat, or kill it instantly. Then you can remove the guts and cook it the proper way.

If a person is a vegan or vegetarian I can maybe understand being upset over the crab killing. For a cooking demonstration, it seems perfectly acceptable. If you're a meat eater, how do you suppose the animal gets to your table? Has to be killed!

May have been a bit uncomfortable to watch - but probably a reality check. Are you a meat eater? Check out some videos of slaughter houses and how your beef is slaughtered. Just because you don't see the killing doesn't make it any less violent.Something to consider if you eat animals. Sea food is a great local food resource for us Santa Barbarians. It is good to know what is available and how to prepare it. Right here off our own coast!
