Are there any non-religious men's groups in Santa Barbara (aside from the Mankind
project)?

If you're new to Santa Barbara, I hear good thing about the Newcomer's Club (although it's not all men, they have some male-related activities).

Pretty much any bar in town has a group of guys hanging out having a good time. Not sure if the guys are there for religious purposes - probably not. Keep in mind that at most bars you will run into women, but mostly it's guys doing what they do and usually a darn good time unless.....UNLESS you overdo the booze, get beer goggles for a patron of your particular persuasion, and wake up the next morning with said patron who does NOT at all look as good as they did the night before. Bottom line is that the bars will definitely put you with a "men's group" if that's what you seek.

The Mens Auxiliary of the Women's Club is nice, but you spend a lot of time cutting the crust off of sanwiches.

OK EZ2, but when you say New Yorkers, are you you talking about the whole state or just the city? To the OP - I had someone in Hope Ranch tell me once that men don't have friends. They have acquaintances and potential future business connections. I was sad for him. I'd guess most "mens" groups around here are sports related - soccer team, rowing club, racquet club, golf league... Masons?

If you are a golfer, try the Santa Barbara Mens Golf Club. They play at Muni every third Sunday of the month and the preceding Monday. Los Paisanos is another local men's golf club. The Santa Barbara Pool League is 90+% men, and they will be starting their summer season soon. The pool league is made up of 5-man teams that are sponsored by one of over a dozen local bars, and they play every Tuesday evening. Simply Google each to find out more info.

If you are over 65, try this group of Old Gaffers, who have been going for years, but needs new members to replace those who have dropped out for health reasons. We are down to a regular four or five. Currently the oldest is 94. The youngest about 65. We meet just before noon at the Empress Palace restaurant at Modoc and Las Positas, each Monday, for about an hour. Lunch with tip is about $15. The discussions roam over almost any subject. Lots of laughs. No reservations required. Just drop by.

Hi folks, OP here. Thanks for the laughs. What I'm looking for is a men's support group that doesn't involve alcohol, religion or misogny. Men of integrity and depth do exist and benefit from interacting with each other. I know there is at least one group in town, but I'm hoping to find one that works with my schedule. Some will know what I'm talking about and the rest of you, keep those jokes coming!

Female here, I do know what you're talking about and sadly, I don't think what you're looking for exists here... yet. Your inquiry might be the opening of the door to create what you are looking for.

My husband recently joined a men's group, sorta... He returned to his old hobby of skeet and trap shooting on Wednesdays, and is really enjoying the group of guys who regularly do this. There's a smattering of women too, but not many. True friendships are growing, and lots of serious, emotional, 'about life' conversations have been had -- and a lot of laughter too. The old way of making friends is still the best. Find an activity you enjoy and a group to enjoy it with. Friendships will follow.

To the OP & 078: Okay, we've got to know--what kind of group ARE you talking about? The Illuminati? Wicca? Shoe fetishists? If you'd just TELL us, maybe we could help you.

I've experienced Mankind and it seems the group is to wrapped up in solving past problems. They never get to the "now what?" stage. They also engage in mind control techniques that are somewhat controversial. I'd appreciate a system that might go through an awakening but at some point actually graduates to an accepted way of just being. Living life, learning and exploiring and thinking about stuff. The problem with sports and bars or both is they are to centrified on either sports or alcohol or both. So you've got to mix it up I guess.

OP again. Thanks for all the comments and chuckles. There's no mystery here, just something a little more evolved than the common mainstream experience. Google "men's groups" if you still don't get it. May you all be happy!

There are several old boys clubs in town. Some have women members like the board of architecture. They recently booted out a member so there may be an opening. But maybe you are one of those guys who wants to hang out and talk about feelings. Good luck!

I have several male friends who are in book clubs. The topic tend to branch out from the books themselves. They are all family men so it flows rather freely since their wife's too are in book clubs. You could consider a Craigslist post. In it, I would list your specific interests, or perhaps a movie or book where specific clubs existed and are described that would get what you are trying for across. I find that all my friends, who are male, became friends through my interests of surfing, flying planes, golf, music etc. So, if you're into photography or a sport that should lead to at least one acquaintance and between the two of you, you can form a club. Learn this from book clubs however- keep the club small or it'll dilute the depth you are seeking very quickly. best of luck.

OP, You are probably not checking this thread anymore BUT I just located a men's group like you wanted but it is in Ventura and run by a therapist. Google Casa de Luna in Ojai and you can see that he is holding a free talk there later this month. But he does run 3 different men's group each week in Ventura at his office I presume. It is $130/mo.
