My wife found this skeleton in the wood mulch in our side yard. Anyone know what animal it was? I am thinking skunk?

It appears to be a skeleton of the very elusive "Chupacabra" which is the legendary cryptid rumored to inhabit parts of the Americas. Great find!

Possums are known for 'playing dead' but this is a bit over the top.

REXOFSB and 939, good comments, early morning chuckles!! Head looks like a possum, a skunk would have a much smaller one..

Do you often leave Taco Bell trash in your yard? If so, then it might be a chalupa-cabra!

978 gets the groaner award. But, probably a possum. Eye sockets are way too big, and the nose too, to be a skunk. Besides, you'd have noticed a dead skunk loooong before now. However, if you want to be sure, scoop it up and take it to the Natural History Museum. They're the coroners of wildlife, and may be able to use the skeleton in an exhibit.
