I would like a referral for someone to run wires for me. We are creating an upstairs office but want the server and UPS in the garage. Is this a job for an electrician? Or a computer tech?

Should be able to use a wireless access point, so there shouldn't be any need for an electrician. Unless of course you don't want to run wireless, and would rather have it hardwired... then you may need an electrician to run networking cables through your floor. Good luck.

Here is a rule of thumb. Hire an electrician to do electrical work and hire a network cabling company to run your network wires. Network guys are not electricians however, an electrician can certainly run your network wires for you.

A drill motor and a drill will allow you to run wire or wires between your house and garage. Dow Marvac has internet cable. Avoid Wifi if you are doing anything sensitive, like handling credit card information. A little time spent on the internet will provide all the details on running internet connections.

Either an internet savvy electrician or a computer wiring technician can help you. Wired is faster than wireless generally, and is more secure. Where ever the UPS & server (& modem & router?) are located, make sure they have adequate ventilation, as well as a dry environment, as they are sensitive to heat and moisture. Marvac/ Dow (Magnolia shopping center) used to have business cards for wiring experts that they personally could vouch for. You might see if they still have those references. (The yellow pages, under "computers" also has a number of references. Yes, I still use the printed yellow pages for lots of service type jobs.)

Network cabling can be done by a network guy, an electrician, or a computer tech - just get someone lisenced and bonded & make sure they know code requirments for wires between garage and the rest of the house. UPS is definitely a job for an electrician. Note that if you opt to put the UPS in a remote location like the garage, you should buy a hardwire UPS instead of a plug-in UPS, and get a building permit and a fire inspection (the wiring will pass through the existing fire-break between the garage and the occupied areas of the house) unless you can get a cowboy electrician to do a not-to-code job for you that would not amuse your insurance carrier. Total cost of a basic plug-in UPS is a few hundred bucks including self-installation. Total cost of a basic hardwired UPS is twice that plus another $500 or or more to install.

We are computer professionals. What you need is a computer professional to do the wireless configuration and hookups. However, you will need broadband cable access into the garage. Talk to our computer colleagues @ Vision Communications for the cabling or Cox Communications. Yours is a very small job.
