Garage Painting
updated: Jun 21, 2012, 11:00 AM

We have a new 2-car garage door, roll-up, metal, with some windows. Anyone know what the going rate is to have it painted to match the house?

Getting a couple of estimates from local painters should do the trick.

Behr goes for about $25 a gallon at Home Depot. What's up with people these days that they can't even use a paintbrush?

Would you want to use a paint brush on a metal garage door? I don't think so..you'd have brush marks all over it.

If you want it done right, it requires spraying, which requires technique, which requires time to learn and proper equipment.

I would venture, if the door is new, with masking and prep work you are probably looking at a 3 - 4 hour job if done right.

If it is an individual panel door (multiple panels that are removable), request that those be removed so they can be painted properly (all edges, etc. get adequate paint). If they paint in place, it's hard to get all the angles, etc. to ensure good coverage everywhere so it lasts a long time.

Depending on who you get, you can expect somewhere around 30 - 50 dollars per hour. In this economy it's a lot easier to find a good deal. Lots of trades are hungry, if you feel the price is high get more bids!

Hope that helps!

@128. Let me introduce you to a 93-year-old homeowner who is blind in one eye and can not stand without a cane. I'm sure you can find something more to ridicule about him.

Adanac Painting in SB 452-8515, he works with SB Overhead doors when they need garage doors painted. Excellent work

I am surprised the garage door company did not order it in the color you wanted, which is typically a complementary color to the house, not an exact match. Garage doors come in a myriad of colors.

Free, this should be a very easy do-it-yourself job. Get some good easy peel masking tape for the windows and the paint color to match and go for it. Paints today are extremely easy to apply and it would be just like taking a sponge and wiping it off if you wanted to clean it, except you paint it instead.

Call Russell Long (252-7582) He did a great job on my metal garage door painted to match the house trim.
