I am going on a backpacking trip soon and I am in need of Dehydrate Refried Bean, does anybody know where I can find those locally? I have checked at Santa Cruz Market, Whole Foods, Ralphs and Gelson all with no luck.

Try one of the backpacking-oriented stores: Mountain Air, SB Outfitters, REI. They're much more likely to stock dehydrated foods.

Isla Vista Food Co-op. Not only dehydrated beans, but soups as well and all in bulk so you can buy as much or as little as you like.

Lazy Acres and IV Co-op. @291351P The poster is not looking for MRE type meals, just bulk dehydrated beans, none of those stores carry that sort of thing.

I've tried the available dehydrated soups and they are really quite good. We used to make our own dried, cooked mashed beans and take them backpacking before all the Moutain House foods became available. Boil, mash and mix with spices, then smear thinly on a cookie sheet, set for a couple of hours in an oven set at lowest poss temp (mine was 170). Stir and break up the clumps several times; make sure they are dry, dry, dry.The flakes would be packaged in ziplocks, then rehydrated with water. We used no fat, but you could add some at rehydration.

Smart and Final has great dehydrated beans. They come in a 3 lb package, just add hot water! Next question.

Hey, Edhat - the singular is "frijol," NOT "frijole." Plural is "frijoles." (Similar to "tamal" and "tamales.")
