I have been going to Johnson Family Dental for well over a decade. They used to be La Cumbre Dental. I've seen several dentists there, and all have been quite good. They have been extremely patient with me in my anxiety over treatment. Unlike other dentists, they skipped the lectures and just helped me get my teeth back in shape. Their business has grown considerably, but the quality of care hasn't been compromised. Good luck!

Dr. Trevor Denny on the Mesa. He comes from a long history of family members who are Dentists. His father taught at USC in the dental department and his uncle is Dr. Herbert Barthels, which is the practice he took over. He is very gentle and gave me the most beautiful crown. You can't even find it in my mouth it matches so well. His office has the most recent equipment. I just can't say enough. Good financing too.

If only I had known this technique before I entrusted my teeth to the wrong 'dentist.' Pick a few names and then call the office of a local endodontist. Forumulate your question so that they won't think they might get sued. . . Like, 'Please respond positively to any of these names.' Those offices have seen it all and they know which ones to steer you towards. If you don't do that I don't care how wonderful your dentist is. That's the correct test. Two names which pass this test: Michael Cooper, DDS and Robert Magnuson, DDS.

For what it's worth, as I know you'll get tons of names, I recommend Dr. Ciani, 1515 State st. 963-0666 without reservation. Don't let the phone # turn you off, it makes me laugh. I only get cleanings and occasional xrays; of course he too checks my teeth. Elaine in the front office is wonderful. I pay $112 out of pocket for a cleaning. Also, Dr. Avolese on State & Alamar has worked with my elderly parent; he's been absolutely fantastic and very reasonable. This work has been more than just cleanings. Betsy in the office is also wonderful. 687-1411 And when needed, the elder went to Dr. Michajlenko, 687-5541, who was exceedingly careful in screening, including an ECG, so we ended up with Dr. Sean Robertson, endodontics, 687-1404. Both are in same building, state & Alamar.

I stopped going to Dr. Johnson when he had "helpers" come into the room and do procedures on me without introducing themselves. I had an impression done for a cap that was so bad that it had to be redone. In case you wonder what that means it had to be drilled off and remade and reapplied. I also had a novacain injection from a female helper ( credentials unknown yet again) that was very painful. It felt like a strike of lightning up the side of my face and it didn't even deaden the correct nerve. I had the feeling that I was a guinea pig for cheap labor.

Julie Hemingway, 2780 State Street, 569-2425. Great cleaning staff, too, and Richard at the front desk is so nice and efficient. Dr. Hemingway explains everything very well and everybody in the office has light hands that won't hurt your mouth. Beautiful view out the window while you're having your teeth cleaned. Her referrals for specialty things like root canals are solid people, the best in the area. We've been going to her for a decade and she has actually completely brought one member of our family out of his fairly extreme gum disease.

Very professional office and staff at Dr. Brian Frederick's dental practice. Located near Cottage Hospital, and they have parking in the back. Ask about new customer discounted cleanings/exam/xrays, as they usually have a promotion. Jarvin is the best hygenist I've ever had at their office and I've shopped around and tried several dentists in town before finding Frederick and his excellent team! They also usually have promotions on their teeth whitening kits. Very friendly and knowledgeable with state-of-the-art technology which helps track your personal dental care from visit to visit.

I've seen many dentists in this town in the last decade. there are a few really great ones and a number of really, really bad ones. Make sure you find one that is fair in billing and in their demeanor. Next time your dentist recommends a procedure - get a second opinion. There are many dentists that are more interested in your money than your mouth. This town has way too many dentists for a population of 150k...

But now, reading that they donated money in support of Prop 8, I am thinking of switching. I'm all for individual free speech, and if the staff choose to donate from their individual resources that's fine, but this $5,000 donation came from the company (according to an internet search of donors).

Dr. Scott hands down ! Very caring , gentle. Conservative approach on care only wants to do things that are in the best interest of the patient and not just doing unnecessary work. He has very reasonable prices and one of the best hygien teams in town . You leave with knowledge of how to care for your teeth and gums, not lectured , and not just how to brush . Never do they try to up sell you product ! I like that! It's irritating to sit there and listen to your hygienist try to get you to buy a tooth brush from them or tell you you should bleach or get cosmetic work done. That should tell you something , like commission off sales!

Dr. Phreaner on State Street is the best dentist our family has ever had. We started going to Dr. Phreaner when we relocated to Santa Barbara 20 years ago. My husband is very particular when it comes to finding medical/dental professionals. Dr. Phreaner is one of the best referrals we had ever received. During my first visit to him, I had to confess that it it had been more years than I wanted to admit to since I had seen a dentist. Instead of scolding, he congratulated me for finding the courage to come in to see him. His communication skills are excellent. Without exception he advises a patient of what he is doing each step of the way and does his best to make the experience painless. We have referred a number of people to him and, without exception, each referral has come back to thank us for the great referral and have become a loyal patient of his. He is definitely has our vote as the "Best Dentist in Santa Barbara"!
